Not according to me!
I am happy to announce that HBO's "True Blood" is finally here--and I eagerly watched the premiere episode, "Strange Love," last night.
My thoughts so far (and surely there will be more to come):
1) The show is setting up an interesting dichotomy between religion (in particular Christianity) and the vampire community. The most interesting evidence of this shows up in the series theme song-montage, which is an eerie, fascinating juxtaposition of the southern sacred--Gospel choirs, charismatic religious experiences, road sings outside churches that read "God Hates Vampires" instead of the more typical, "Jesus Saves"--and the erotic profane--naked bodies entangled, vampires sucking on necks. You get the idea.
2) I love the Louisiana setting. The swampy, buggy, humid backwater community is perfect for both the vampire angst and loner angle, as well as adding a dash of humor.
3) So far the characters seem a bit awkward--not quite sinking well into their roles, save Anna Paquin, the lead as Sookie Stackhouse, who is winning, funny, and full of life (for now). She's running the show (so to speak) so far. I hope her fellow cast members pick up the slack in the episodes going forward.
What did you think?

The roadside sign, seen just in passing, read "God Hates Fangs". For some of us this strikes very close Fred Phelps rantings of "God Hates Fags". I am sure the parallels between being gay and being a vampire were deliberate. As a gay man it was interesting to see the same battles we fight being fought by another community. I personally did not enjoy the show. The backwoods Louisiana locale is about as foreign to me as Mars would be and so were the characters. I don't think I've seen that many handsome men in one show. On the other hand I'd like to get to know Sookie.
I don't think God hates anyone.
Linda-would Jesus really want to be bitten? It does make me think of the similarities between drinking the blood of christ and vampires.
So far this show is great. I took at least one episode to get past some of the sluggish accents. The concept is unique to say the least. I am also enjoying the fact that Sookie can read human minds but not vampires. Oh. Did I mention that it was genius that "V" is used to get an erection?
I agree that the characters (minus sookie) are obviously trying to figure out what fits. Having a show that is unique, inspires thought, and has vampires makes me happy. At least for now.
