Jewish Living Magazine Folds

posted by Esther Kustanowitz | 11:25am Thursday October 2, 2008

jewishlivingmagcover.jpgRosh Hashanah marks the start of the new Jewish year, but this new year brought a tough break for Jewish Living Magazine. Touted a year ago as the Jewish answer to Martha Stewart Living, the glossy magazine hoped to compete in a world where it’s becoming increasingly difficult for a magazine of any sort to stay afloat, let alone make a substantial profit.
The last few months has seen the folding of two Jewish magazines that I’ve enjoyed: Jewish Living, and American Jewish Life. Other magazines are still hanging on, but many have private funding and don’t rely on advertising alone, as traditional magazines did. Of course, writers and editors are not in it for the money (or we’d be doing something else, believe us). But maybe it’s just too much to try to make a profit on a magazine that appeals mostly to such a small percentage of the world population.

Magazine publishing is a tough sell to advertisers–only the names we already know as prestigious are still managing to make a go at it, and they’re only succeeding by integrating online content and largely on the laurels of their reputations.
Despite the bad news and the number of print publications (magazines, newspapers, and even book presses) which fold every year, the publishing world is only mostly dead (which, as any Princess Bride fan can tell you, is “partly alive”). There’s still something about holding a product in your hand, something that you’ve worked with or grown with, or connected with. And as a writer, there’s something about having your name on a page you can touch that the internet, as a largely intangible medium, can’t compete with.
As the industry evolves, we’ll probably see this struggle again–the latest battle between the pragmatists, who realize that the future (and actually, the present) is online, and the poet-aesthetes who may not really fear change, but who wish that certain things would remain the same.

I was excited for the launch of JL Magazine and am saddened by this news. I believe that there is a definite market for such a publication and wish that it could have hung in there just a little longer!

Never heard of either mag-poor pr and probubly placement had a big part I would guess.
Do not tell me that editors, etc are not in it for the money because the publishers and others sure are! My daughter is an editor and if they did not get money the biz folds. The bucks are on the right mag with the right stuff on the internet anyway and I would love to have been ever able to get what my daughter gets! Her biz is not a magazine but a business that is world wide where they need journalists and editors and content directors (her job now).
Paper is not where the bucks and the people are anymore.
Soon their will be no newspapers or mags on the stands because they put themselves often for free on the internet and then wonder-gee why is not somebody ponying up $5 or less to read this????
Suggestion-go to Monster.com and look for a job (ok now you know but do not let my daughter know or shed kill me or just let me live in fear(LOL)

Spit!
I subscribed to this & got my first issue just two weeks ago. With it came an offer to subscribe for two more years at a discounted rate. I’m sorry to see this one go. I live in an area with no other Jews, this mag was going to help me be part of the Jewish community.

I am very saddened by this news..I subscribed for all of my daughters and myself and we all enjoyed the articles and recipes…My whole holiday table this year came from the Mag.
I think this filled an important void for young Jewish families and hope funding can be found to help it to reopen.

Hey This is not right according to any standards. I am not Jewish or a Publisher but sometimes I pretend to be a poet. You must keep writing even if it is on-line. Folks need to hear what you have to say.I was not loud enough or rich enough or strong enough to stick up for myself and so now I live poverty. There is help available only to folks with the right connections, however I beleive if we can remain on-line we will make the connection. So I will be your cheer-leader and encourage you to keep writing despite the setbacks. I’m so very sorry to hear the news. I only recently heard about your magazine, and couldn’t wait to get my hands on a copy. Naturally I would be having my very own subscription to read and re-read. I too live in a community with no other Jews, so I so looked forward to the connection. Maybe give it another try, and do much more on getting the word out that this exists!

I found this magazine at my daughter’s Orthodontist’s office and immediately subscribed. I am sad to hear that the magazine is folding after only receiving three issues.
I emailed trying to find out if they were subbing another magazine for the remainder of my subscription. No response. Yesterday, I received a RENEWAL order form! They know they’re folding and are sending out renewal forms? Insane.

I spoke to a guy named Dan (sent out the original e-mail regarding the folding of the magazine) and he indicated that they were trying to sub out another magazine. I had just sent in my payment for another two years and I, too, kept receiving renewal notices after the fact. I really enjoyed the magazine and am not sure if there is another one that I will be happy with. At this point, I just want them to refund my money.

I too enjoyed the uniqueness and diversity of articles the Magazine offered. I paid for a two year subscription, only recieved one year and then got an additional renewal this past fall. I fear we have no financial discourse as we are what’s called “unsecured creditors”. Perhaps all of us can write the magazine at the NY address listed inside the magazine, as phones are now disconnected. It would be nice that we can offer up our praise as well as our disappointment and how they handled things.

Really disappointed in the lack of professionalism for two Jewish magazines to which I subscribed this past year, Jewish Living and Guilt & Pleasure. Both have folded, neither sent notice nor refunds for the difference between the number of magazines I received and my subscription (2 each). Last time I’ll support newbie magazines.
Thanks for letting us know.

I had contacted the publisher after the magazine folded, as I was very disappointed it folded. I looked forward to the new issues and in fact had just resubscribed for myself and given two new gift subscriptions to my mom and aunt. I was told by the owners that they would replace the magazines, as publishers are suppossed to….but it’s now approaching January and they have not followed through with their word. I am writing to them again now. Maybe if a bunch of us get together and approach them again, they will do something..I would be happy with getting a refund, as times are tough for all of us.

I, too had a two year subscription and received only 3 issues. I was going to subscribe for my two daughters, as well. I am deeply disappointed on several levels. First, this was a terrific magazine, which I enjoyed immensely. I’m sure the invitation to renew for 2 years was their failed attempt to keep the magazine going and that they simply did not get enough influx of subscriptions to, say, impress investors. Given more time and better marketing, maybe they could have survived.
However, to discontinue service with no word to subscribers (I learned on line) is unconscionable: a post card, an email, a press release, and apology….something….would have been appreciated. Nevertheless, I understand their predicament and, hey, it was great while it lasted. I would still buy their back issues (I missed issue 1 and 2) if they offered them (actually, if they have them, they should offer them to unfulfilled subscribers!)

I had already had problems receiving my issues for a while; I really enjoyed the magazine and wanted to make sure to get my issues. I had to call them to find out why I didn’t receive it. In fact, I just went on line to get their contact info so I could call to see why I hadn’t received the last issue and I’m just now finding out it’s folded. I’m very disappointed that it’s gone, but not surprised. I agree with Elane… they should have sent out one more mailing to let us know that they couldn’t make a go of it; To thank those of us who did subscribe (especially since we’ve paid for issues we won’t be receiving). Next time I find a cool magazine for the Jewish community, I’ll just look for somewhere to pick it up as it comes out before I subscribe again.

My daughters and I were wondering why we didn’t get another issue. I had subscribed for myself and my two daughters and only received the Rosh HaShana issue. We agree that they should have had the courtesy to notify their subscribers that they were discontinuing publishing. And, they should have had the ethics to stop soliciting for new readers if they knew they were in such dire straights. Whatever happened to Jewish values?

I am VERY disappointed the magazine did not succeed. I was excited with it’s “young” attitude and interesting articles. I ordered 5 subscriptions for Hanukah gifts last year. I too feel that we should have been notified. It’s bad enough we’re not getting our money back, but I agree we should have at least been offered another magazine! Did they send an email saying the magazine was going under? I don’t remember getting anything from Jewish Living!

I am very disappointed with the lack of professionalism and honesty shown by the publishers in not alerting their subscribers to the fact that they were considering closing up shop. It appears they continued to solicit new subscribers until the very last minute, even though they knew that they would not be providing the magazine for the subscribed period. I wonder what happened to the money they collected for subscriptions not honoured. Was this another ponzi scheme?

I thought this was the best magazine I saw in a long time. I am Jewish but not very involved in the Jewish community, and this magazine allowed me to keep in touch with the going-ons in the larger Jewish community in an open, accessable way.
But … it was very hard to find! Barnes and Nobles did carry it, but they would bury it in with their ‘women’s interest’ magazines, as I subsequently found out – who would look for it there?! Border’s did something similar (I forgot in which unintuitive section they hid it in). I really wonder if this contributed to the magazine’s problem? The magazines were in the stores, but readers couldn’t find it to buy it.
I surely can’t be the only reader that had a very hard time locating the magazine to buy each issue.

I would like to know why when Jewish Living folded, people with running subscriptions (I had just resubscribed for myself and two gift subscriptions to my mom and aunt) were not sent other magazines by the Publisher…this is what Publishing companies routinely do as a show of good business. I also do not appreciate the Publishers having my money for three new subscriptions, of which, we only received one or two issues..I think I will contact the Better Business Bureau, unless anyone else has a better idea?
