Well, apparently, keeping everyone from having a simultaneous spiritual, emotional, and physical breakdown, that's what.
At least according to the New York Times.
In a recent article, "Staying Healthy in a Sick Economy," reporter Mandy Katz had this to say about apparent the (economic) healing powers of yoga:
"On Wall Street, when the going gets tough, will the tough get yoga mats? Adding classes in yoga, meditation and other so-called mind-body regimens is just one way fitness professionals in the financial district are responding to recent economic uncertainties roiling their corporate clientele...Fitness matters more than ever if you're laid off, career counselors advise, not just for health, but to network and stay positive. "The last thing you want is to gain 20 pounds during a job search, " said Dr. Jan Cannon, author of "Finding a Job in a Slow Economy." "That just compounds that sense of, 'What's wrong with me?'" Exercise, she added, can also spur creativity. "You know how we always have those 'aha' moments in the shower?" Dr. Cannon said. In the same way, "a good brisk walk can be very helpful."...Dr. Cannon recalled a client whose workouts last spring "got more frequent as time went on" -- to block out the disappointment, and to give her something to get up and do every day."
I'll do yoga if it helps us all get through this. What "spiritual exercises" are you taking up to help get through these tough times?

Hi,
Scripture is the place I go for encouragement. I found that when asked the Holy Spirit does lead me by focusing on the scriptures that are uplifting. I have a group of nearly 60 to 100 hundred that seem to have become my inner mantra and songs that come to mind repeatedly.I have found myself joy"full" and content.
My yoga classes in Minneapolis have been packed recently!!! Mat to mat! Perhaps this is why. I find myself going to practice detachment from my own economic fears and making myself go frequently for the spiritual clarity. It is one place I can slow down and return to what I know is the most important.
Yoga, Is one of the most wonderful experiences that I have had, thanks to my wife.
I am a Senior, and have been working with weights for years. I have maintained physical strength, but not flexability.
Yoga to the rescue.I started about four months ago and I feel the best that I have ever felt. More endurance, better circulation, and breathing properly.
I just took a blood test, and my Doctor said that he wished all his Senior patients would take my advice and start a Yoga experience. He also said that it will add quite a few more years to my life:)

PS: Thanks to my wonderful instructer Pam Peaerson:)
Tai chi is a practice that has been helpful to me lately. It is very easy for an older person and also helps to meditate as yoga does.
