Bronx Mowgli: Enough with the Crazy Celeb Baby Names!

posted by Ellen Leventry | 10:52am Monday November 24, 2008

ashleesimpsonpetewentz.jpgAfter I heard that Pete Wentz and Ashlee Simpson named their newborn boy Bronx Mowgli, not only did I get an “icky” feeling, but I got a “that’s a bizarre Rudyard Kipling literary reference” feeling. Then, I realized that the baby’s initials are B.M.W.–is this a luxury baby?–I couldn’t take the craziness of celebrity kids names anymore.

When Gywneth Paltrow and Chris Martin named their son Moses after naming their daughter Apple, I thought, “Well, at least it’s a proper name and not a piece of fruit.”

Truth be told, I have no real qualms with the name Apple, not like the qualms I have with Pilot Inspektor, the name of Jason Lee’s son, or Zuma Nesta Rock, the name given by Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale to their recent bundle of joy. If these kids weren’t splashed all over the pages of People and US Weekly, would we even be able to tell their genders? Typically, a name ending with an “a” is feminine, and yet Zuma is a definite curveball. (Zuma’s a boy, by the way.)

And don’t forget the Beckhams–David and Victoria–who named their first son, Brooklyn, after the New York City borough where he was conceived. Which, personally, I also find kinda icky. I understand that naming one’s child is a very personal thing, but if you absolutely need to be different, why not take a common name and add your own spin to it? Why not dig into the archive of archaic names and bring back oldies but goodies like Hildegard or Aloitious?

Think of the children. Please, think of the children and the potential harassment they may encounter. Kids can turn even the simplest of names into a taunting mantra. Imagine the TSA/Pilot Inspektor jokes that will come up.

So, what do you think about the trend of celebrities giving their children creative names? Which name(s) do you love/or hate?

I thought long and hard about the name I gave my daughter. I realized when choosing a name that a name was the first, and most lasting gift I could give my child, and I was very careful not to give in to my hormonal whims, or flights of fancy, and choose a name that was beautiful, and traditional, and unique in it’s own way, but didn’t lend itself to juvenile mocking. Even thought she is only six, she loves her name and takes great pride in it. Let’s see Zuma pull that off in the coming years.

Your Name

My birthname is “Michael”. There were at least three other “Mikes” in every class I was in…that’s way too common! I wish my folks had been a little more adventursome. I agree with the notion of protecting a child from teasing but little Bronx isn’t likely to be in school with bullies. The worst name I’ve ever seen was the daughter of a woman I worked with…her baby daughter’s middle name was “Clitoria”….her Mom thought it was beautiful!

Just realized that the best gift that you will give to your child first is her/his life and second his/her name that will bring your child to his/her fate. Choose a name that could be considerable not only in your sides but for all the people surrounds you.

That’s well known that money makes us independent. But what to do when somebody does not have cash? The only one way is to get the loan or commercial loan.
