The Palladia Channel: TV’s Best-Kept Secret

posted by Douglas Howe | 9:44am Monday January 5, 2009

palladia_logo.gifOne of the most raw and inspiring concert performers of our time is Bruce Springsteen, and one of the most recognizably tight bands of all time is his E Street Band. As such, tickets to the concerts are expensive and hard to come by. Even when you do get one, it’s hard to be close enough to the stage to see the faces, the sweat , and everything else that makes every performance as much a wonder as it is a showpiece.

That’s why I was thrilled to find the “Live in Barcelona” concert (in High Definition) on a station that may be one of the better kept secrets of TV land: the Palladia channel. Have you heard of it?

I did a little homework and found that Palladia is owned by Viacom’s MTV Networks, and it has access to programming from VH1, CMT, MTV, and MTV2. This means great music shows such as “Soundstage” and “The Storytellers” can be found here, in HD format.

Beyond that, what makes Palladia wonderful is that it’s almost exclusively music, something that some of us remember from the old days of MTV and VH1. This is sort of like VH1 without the VJ, at least most of the time. Apparently, there are three–George Oliphant, Mayleen Ramey, and Jeremy Bloom–but I haven’t seen them yet.

This week, Palladia’s programming has included not only Springsteen’s concert–complete with the production values and close-ups that give you the least expensive best seat in the house–but also Coldplay’s 2005 concert in London, Elvis Costello in Memphis, R.E.M., Paul McCartney, Green Day, Amy Winehouse, Christina Aguilera, and even “V Fest 2008″ which featured Duffy, OneRepublic, Newton Faulkner, The Kooks, and the Stereophonics.

Good concerts have always been inspirational to me. Many performers are at their best with a live audience which gives them the chance for some spontaneity. I believe that excellence with talent honors God and inspires people, and I’m glad Palladia’s on the map to help my bride and I see more this year on TV than we’ll be able to afford in person!

My bride and I plan on spending more redemptive TV time in 2009 and the Palladia channel will be a frequent stop. You can learn more at Palladia.tv.

What first tuned me into the fact that this channel is filled with good stuff was one of their own “ads” that plays between videos/concerts/etc. I’ve long since grown out of my teen years and I recall the day when MTV first “exploded” onto the scene. I’m now watching over my own teenage baby sister, and out of my concern for the children at large, I occassionally scan through the music channels to check on what’s being “put out there”.
I happened across Palladia late one night- admittedly out of boredom rather than anything productive. I enjoyed a few videos and made a mental note of the channel.
Last week, I turned the television to Palladia while it played in the background. That’s when I noticed the ad that I refer to. I have told the little ones in my life that you can tell much about the messages and attitudes of the entertainment artists by their band names, song titles, etc., so when I caught the ad out of the side of my eye, I made a note and now I’m passing it on!
The ad is what told me to watch, and now that I have, my hope is for others to feel and pass on the message of unity and peace that I get! (whenever I’m blessed with the time to watch that is! lol)
In closing, I’d like to add to the author’s “thumbs-up” on this GREAT NEW MUSIC CHANNEL’S LINE UP- If the ATTITUDE behind the programs are indicative of the attitude and heart behind the parent company (and I believe that must be!), then this “best-kept secret” isn’t best kept, but rather it is best passed along!!
( But if you’re on BELIEFNET’s website, you already knew that, didn’t you?!?! )
Peace, love and a smile to everyone out there!

That was the first time I have ever posted a comment to anything.
Guess I did something to erase my name (?), but I’m Sam (Samantha)- and I’m the person that just sent in the blog/comment above.
Peace!

I stumbled upon Palladia a couple of weeks ago and loved it. But when I went an entire Saturday without watching basketball on TV, I knew I was hooked. This is way better than the first days of MTV and VH1. I’m extremely impressed with the intimate venues and laid-back atmosphere that makes you feel that you really know the performers. I hope you will continue to expand on this great concept.

I’m more than a little concerned that Palladia is allowing artists to clean things up in post-production. If this is true they need to come clean. I enjoy seeing all of these artists, but if they’re not truly ‘live’ that changes everything.

I Totally LOVE Crossroads, with two artists from different genres singing each other’s songs. I caught the end of Joss Stone with Lean Rhymes, PLEASE run it again so I can see if from the beginning.
Loved Robert Plant and Allison Krauss the other night. Better than the CD for sure.

I love Pallidia! But, I do not the censorship on it. Tom Petty having the lyrics, “roll another joint” silenced. Pink having a gesture blurred. Come-on, these a great artist, not politicians! Let us, the fans, see and hear what our favorites artist are sing and doing. I tried to find a way to send an email to Pallidia, and for the life of me, I can not see how to make contact.
