For Rizzle?! Rapper Snoop Dogg Joins Nation of Islam

posted by dross | 9:25am Wednesday March 4, 2009

snoopdogg.jpgRapper and sometimes actor Snoop Dogg has revealed that he has joined the Nation of Islam, according to the BBC. After appearing at the group’s Saviour’s Day event in Chicago, Snoop told reporters why he decided to officially join the group though refused to say exactly when he joined.

“I’m an advocate for peace, I’ve been in the peace movement ever since I’ve been making music…My whole thing is not about really trying to push my thing on you. It’s just about the way I live, and I live how I’m supposed to live as far as doing what’s right and representing what’s right–that’s why I was here today.”

I find it very interesting that Snoop Dogg, one of the original gangsta rappers–a genre of rap music that is inherently violent, misogynistic, and advocates drug use and drug dealing–claims to be a peaceful guy. Just a few years ago he was arrested in connection with a murder, and in 2000 he produced a porn, the name of which I probably shouldn’t repeat here. But, to his credit, I haven’t heard of him being arrested over the last year–at one point he was always in trouble with the law for his public marijuana use. And, from what I’ve seen on his E! reality show “Snoop Dogg’s Father Hood,” he seems to be a loving and caring husband and father. So on one hand, good for Snoop! But on the other, well, let’s just say I’m thinking he could have chosen a more peaceful religion or philosophy to adhere to.
From Beliefnet’s Nation of Islam Page:

The Nation of Islam’s declared aim is the raising of the moral, social, and economic standing of non-whites. This has included the vilification of the dominant group, white Caucasians, even to the point of calling whites the personification of evil and maintaining that the white race is an aberration, the human race having originally been black. Therefore, according to this theory, blacks must pursue separate development.

You can make your own judgment as to whether that sounds peaceful or not.

I think you are really wrong about the what he chose. You are implying that Islam is not a peaceful religion. However, it is not the religion, but the group you are giving the example of. I think you are mixing things up. Please do some research (real research), about the peace concept of the religions, then comment about it.
Also, it is not about your past when you choose Islam, but about your future. He certainly have done a lot of things in the past, but what is important for him now is that, what will he do next as a Muslim (if he is choose to be one).

Helebek– There is a big difference between Islam and The Nation of Islam. They are two seperate religions and although there are some tenets of Islam that The Nation of Islam follow, they are very difference in practice.

I think it’s good that he’s at least attempting to turn his life around, like when he quit using marijuana in order to coach his son’s sports team.
But yes, there are HUGE differences between Islam and the NOI, and that slight bit of ignorance just muddled the point you were trying to make. BOO!

What does religion of any kind have to do with race? Don’t we all bleed red? We are all humans no matter the color of our skin. Plus, if a person is mixed does that say that they can’t be part of this nation of Islam? People get real. You are either a peaceful person or a dramatic person whoever you might be.

Wow, I just learned something!
I was not aware there were two different Islam Religions.
So which one did Snoop join? Nation of Islam or Islam and which is the non-violent and non-judgemental one? I am half white so does that mean I could not join if I wanted to? Just curious. Any place that promotes seperation of the races,or any violent action or thought towards others is not my idea of Brotherhood and God’s Love.

Wow, a lot of you guys don’t even know what you are talking about. The Nation of Islam isn’t black only. There’s plenty of Latinos, Asians, native people, and Arabs. And yeah “half”-white still counts as non-white and you can join. It’s also not a “race” thing as the guy below me pointed out. The job of the Nation of Islam is to uplift the “lost people” in North America (The poor and the oppressed) and the reason whites aren’t included is because you can’t help a different group of people, until you help your own self. It’s also like how the Nation of Islam tells its members not to help out the African cause if they can’t help themselves here in America. If there’s a lot of poor minorities and Islam is there to “save” and it’s the religion of “peace”, then I would assume it would begin with the bottom (blacks) up. Not a universal religion where people join left and right, with the goal of uplifting poor people dying first before it even starts.

That’s absolutely preposterous. I cannot believe Snoop Dogg joined Nation of Islam. I am 100% against their beliefs. Their teachings and rituals are inappropriate and absurd. By the way, Nation of Islam and Islam are two completely different religions. Don’t get confused now, I am a Muslim. How can a religion promote racism and give power to one race and weaken another? In this case, if you ask me, Nation of Islam is all false.
