WWJT: What Would Jesus Tweet?

posted by Kris Rasmussen | 12:36pm Wednesday March 25, 2009

Recently fellow blogger Donna asked Idol Chatter readers if they were getting into tweeting as evangelism on messaging and social networking device Twitter. Now with Easter only a short time away, several pop culture watchers are asking a different question: What would Jesus tweet?
Many a person in the blogosphere has speculated on the question of how Jesus would use this modern technology to communicate the gospel, but one article that really caught my eye was George Pitcher’s column over at the UK paper The Telegraph. According to Pitcher, if Jesus was giving a second by second accounting of his final days on Earth before his crucifixion it might go something like this: “Have decided to go to Jerusalem– it’s just something I must do….arrived on the back of a mule– lots of hosannas and palm leaves, but a week’s a long time in Roman politics…Lost it a bit with the money-changers at the Temple, but they’re going to have to listen now”

Pitcher makes the point that he thinks modern technology is actually a great way to integrate the sacred with the secular to make people take notice and he is certainly not the only one. The Church of England is also exploiting the fast-paced instant gratification of Twitter and the social networking website Facebook through their :”Live, Love , Lent” campaign. Or you could even check out these Twiiter updates over at the parables of a prodigal world website.
I personally have to confess I am a little skeptical of using impersonal technology to convey such a personal message as the crucifixion and resurrection of Christ, but then again, I am so far behind the times technology-wise that I only this week finally got around to creating a Facebook page. So maybe it’s only a matter of time before I start wishing that Jesus would send me a little tweet.

I was reading Nellie’s message above and it really got me thinking. If people can use the world wide web to post the worst of the worst type messages including pornography etc., then why couldn’t Jesus use the web to post HIS MESSAGE? I think too many Christians today get so caught up in the secular world around them we (myself included) forget that the life we live now is only temporary. I sometimes take time out and think about the message Jesus teaches and remember that new DVD player I want or those new clothes they are just things. I have to remember the gifts of God’s eternal promise. I hope that all Christians will sit down today and remember the message and forget for 5 minutes about that text message you just got, the email you have to read or the blog you want to see on someone’s Facebook and just realize how special we are. Christians are special because they have HOPE. Without that HOPE, there is no reason to get out of bed each day. My hope this Easter is that all Christians will take this one moment and remember Hope of a better life for all of us is coming…

Never forget that those of us who are circumcised in our heart and who claim the Holy Blood of our Christ as our salvation, are now Christ’s collective body on earth. As His sons and daughters, we are not only his children– we are expected to act as his agents in this physical realm. In light of the question, “What Would Jesus Tweet?”, I think that He just may be prodding YOU and Me to put His answer into our hand. Pray with an honest heart. If Christ’s Holy Spirit tells you to us this modern technology, including Tweeting, then do it without delay! If not, I am sure that he will guide you to communicate His message of perfect Love and salvation for all in other ways. The answer the, “What would Jesus tweet?” lies in your open heart. It is not necessary rhetorical. It is vitally important that you do whe He wants you to do, in total faith!! Tweet away, if He is urging you to do so, just be SURE that you communicate in His perfect Will. God bless us and strengthen us all, AMEN! Maranatha!
