‘New Moon’ Movie Poster: Ack!

posted by Donna Freitas

NewMoonPicture.jpgSo I can’t help but respond to Dena’s Idol Chatter post about the release of the “New Moon” movie poster to the press–especially since I hate it! I am Team Edward through and through, and it was one thing to suffer the Edward-Bella separation in the novel of “New Moon”–even though I do like the way the friendship (emphasis on friendship) develops between Bella and Jacob–but it’s another to see Bella in JACOB’S arms on the poster for the film! Ugh.
Does anyone else out there agree with me? It makes me a bit nervous for the movie, since I was not exactly over the moon (ha!) about the choice of actors for Jacob in “Twilight,” either. I’m a little worried that “New Moon” is going to end up being too much Jacob Black and not enough Edward Cullen.
Two other things:
1) Has there ever been so much buzz for the release of a movie poster before? Seriously. It’s been covered in every newspaper, webzine, and magazine in the country. This shows what a huge phenomenon “Twilight” has become.
2) The initial footage for “New Moon” will be shown during the MTV Movie Awards on May 31st. I can’t wait to see it! (And I’m hoping it will calm my worries about too much Jacob…)

Well, the whole premise behind the story IS to bring Jacob into the triangle…gotta have that monkey wrench thrown in to cause all the angst for the next two stories. However, I’m thrilled b/c I’m Team Jacob all the way. Doesn’t mean I hate Edward, he’s quite cool – I just like Jacob more.

I understand your point. I’m more of a team Switzerland, but if your coming from the Team Edward point of view I would be a bit unsettled too. However, New Moon is nearly all about Bella and Jacob’s friendship/relationship and I think the filmmaker is using that to up the drama a lot. After this movie we will get all our Bella and Edward scenes :) It will be pretty exciting to see how the movie turns out. All the hype is crazy, I agree. Totally a cult following!! Lol. Thanks for your post.

I think that this movie poster is straight forward and to the point. It reciprocates exactly what the the book is about; Jacob coming between Edward and Bella. But im also a Team Edward fan so when i see that all the alarm bells go off. I think its been taken very well but HARRAH for when Edward gets his act together and goes back to Bella. :)

This is about the zillionth commentary like this I’ve seen on the poster, and I have to admit I’m thoroughly confused. Did you really read New Moon? And for that matter, did you read Eclipse? If so, did you completely miss the fact that New Moon is (in reality, not in Bella’s seriously unhealthy psyche) heavily if not primarily about Jacob? And the fact that she needs him like a drug? Did you miss the “realization” that Bella comes to just before the climactic battle in Eclipse? I hate to potentially destroy anyone’s happy little fairy tale bubble, but it is possible to be in love with two people, to have conflicting desires. Yes, Bella is clearly meant to end up with Edward. But how boring (and how much shorter) would the series be without Jacob coming into the picture in such a meaningful way? These are all things that Team Edward groupies need to seriously consider before seeing New Moon.
In the interest of full disclosure, I feel I should say that I’m not on any particular “Team” in the Twilight fandom. Not even Team Switzerland.

Well technically Jacob’s arms are down and not around Bella suggesting more that he’s in the way. As Bella’s hands are held only on top of his arms and not circling him in any way, this suggest that she’s bracing herself against Jacob. And if you really read New Moon that is pretty much what she does she uses Jacobs strength to get her through her nightmare. Try looking up helpful tips on body language. =)

I agree that the hype over this movie is unbelievable. The poster doesn’t depict the story very well to me. She doesn’t have that kind of relationship with Jacob. It gives the appearance of more than friendship, which doesn’t exist at this point. I find myself in awe that I am responding to chat about it! In my 39 years I have never been so enamored with a series of books – which of course (let’s be honest) is what has lead to this phenomenon. I can’t wait to see the movie. My only hope is that it is truer to the story line than the first was. We know it is going to be sad because the book was about Bella’s depression when Edward left her. But we all know how the story ends!!!!

I don’t completely agree with you, but I understand your frustration. From my understanding, we Team Edward fans are going to be getting ALOT more Edward in the movie than even the book gives us, so don’t fret. New Moon is supposed to be about the developing relationship between Bella and Jacob, and how much she relies on him to help her heal. I can see why she is next to him and not next to Edward in the poster. Don’t worry, I think Taylor will be a great Jacob in New Moon, and I think you will be very surprised at how much you are going to love the movie.

I think Bella should have been in the middle because she is clearly torm between them. Jacob shouldn’t have been positioned as the barrier. However, instead of everyone freaking out about the poster they should be freaking out about rumors that there won’t be a proposal in New Moon!!!! Life & Style Magazine has the latest script and says that Edward has a different bargaining chip instead of marriage because it would seem too out of place and sudden since “I love you” was never said in Twilight. Scary stuff. There had better be a proposal. How could they leave out the proposal??? Adding a new motorcycle scene with Bella and some ganster…okay no big deal. Throwing in a fight scene between Laurent and the wolves…that’s cool. But leaving out THE PROPOSAL???….that’s disgusting. It makes me sick to think that they are going to RUIN the perfect ending. Nothing can replace the propsal. Nothing!!

I too am in awe to find myself posting to a chat about this poster! Anyways…I think the poster is “technically” great – for the record, Bella claims she can only be “friends” with Jacob, but even admits to herself that she behaves in ways that might lead him to think she can be more, ie. holding hands – she is not embracing him in the poster, but their closeness does indicate the strength of their relationship – the fact that Edward is front and center in the poster shows how much more he is to be featured in the movie compared to the book, and really how can you blame them? they’d be crazy not to exploit Rob’s popularity at least somewhat, and any movie based on a book shouldn’t follow it to the letter either, but capture the spirit, as they experienced as two different types of media – my only issue with the poster is that it looks formulaic, like it could been created with step-by-by step instructions from a marketing school or by a computer – doesn’t “grab” me like some of better the fan-made posters

First of all, it also amazes me to see the amount of thought and discussion that has gone into a movie poster! It truly does show the depth of the fans for the saga. I, honestly, don’t see what all of the fuss is about. I enjoyed the friendship that blossomed between Jacob and Bella in New Moon. I think it is a big chapter in Bella and Edward’s relationship, and it plays a big part in Eclipse. I am with the pro-Edward group, but I also know that her friendship with Jacob plays a big part as well. That being said- I think the poster is appropriate. Edward is facing away from Bella with a torn look on his face- glancing behind him back to her. Jacob is protecting her- the way he does throughout New Moon. The only thing that threw me off is the look on Bella’s face. It didn’t fit for me. I think I would have liked it better if she was looking at Edward. Its just a poster, though, lol. I actually hope the opposite- that they don’t over do the Edward infusion and ruin the storyline of getting to know Jacob. Oh, and I disagree about the proposal, too. I thought it was a bit out of the blue in the BOOK, and I could do without it. Leave it for Eclipse.

I agree with most of the comments, yeah Bella should be positioned in the middle, but if you think of it this way, Edward is distancing himself from Bella, and in a way Jacob has taken the role of Edward in the sense of “protecting Bella”. And as they both see each other as enemies, how Jacob doesn’t like vampires and how Edward sees Werewolves as dangerous as well as his “own kind” the poster makes sense, because it is showing that. Edward loves Bella so much he even says in Twilight the book I love you so much because I can leave if i need to, to protect you. So i don’t really see this poster as being much of an issue, but i can see what some of you are trying to say, I mean I am TEAM EDWARD all the way, but New Moon is basically about Jacob and Bella, the start of a friendship, the start of “new love” so they have to show this in their media campaigns for those who haven’t read the book, they are in a way preparing the fans for New Moon, and how it is in the book, because i hear that it is made as close to the book as it can be, obviously they have to change a few things around and possibly exaggerate some because they are making a movie.

I agree with Lina they cannot leave out the proposal – that would STINK!!!! The poster conveys to me that Jacob is protecting Bella from Edward – to me that kind of happens in Eclipse not New Moon. In Eclipse Bella comes to the realization of her true feelings for Jake and Jake tries to always be there for her
I don’t like the poster since throughout New Moon Bella is paralyzed by Edward not being there in her life and as much as she consumes her time with Jacob, the thought of Edward always lingers – she jumped off the cliff w/out Jake so she could hear Edward’s voice in her head this happens right before she goes to Italy which is past the first 3/4′s of the book. I can’t wait to see the movie as well.

I think the poster is a great representation of the book. Bella isn’t IN Jacob’s arms, he’s just standing between her and Edward -Jacob didn’t want her to go back to Edward, so this makes sense. And she isn’t looking at either of them, she’s looking past both of them, like she can’t make up her mind. The book was a bit more about Bella and Jacob’s relationship (friendship) than Bella and Edward -since, as said before, Edward did leave. I’m just hoping the movie is more true to the book that Twilight was. Hopefully the movie will be awesome! Can’t wait for the clip!

I love the poster. I think it says a lot about the book. I am more of an Edward fan than a Jacob one, but a huge portion of the book (and of those to follow) is about Bella’s unconditional love for Edward, but her inability to stop loving Jacob in the way that she does. Thus, her hand on Jacob’s arm is kind of like saying that she doesn’t really want to let him go.
I think Edward’s stance in the poster is very relative to his actions in New Moon. He turned away from Bella and barely looked back at her. And Jacob looks fitting in between Edward and Bella, because all of his time in New Moon and the following books is spent trying to keep Bella away from the vampire. Can you think of a time in New Moon where Jacob didn’t try to come between them in some way?

I am for Team Jacob, but my opinions are not biased. I agreed with some of the other comments. If you would have read the whole series, then you would understand the story. Bella seeks friendship in Jacob that may go beyond what she really feels, and I also agree with the other comment, you can love two people at once, it is possible. I had no idea what a huge Twilight fan I became until I read these books. When I got started I was hooked. I am excitingly waiting for the movie to come out, can’t wait.

The poster is the least of my worries. Let’s not forget that although Edwards reason for leaving was understandable, Jacob is the one who brought Bella back to life. She is in the middle of them, only as a mediator, not in the sense of confusion over who to pick. Any twilight fan knows who Bella wants, and she would ultimately desert everyone in her life it meant she could be with Edward. My real concern is the changes made from the book to the movie. I understand everything from the book cannot translate into a movie. However, why change the scenes that will be in it. They did this with Twilight. Although I couldn’t help but watch the movie (over and over), I couldn’t understand why they put a senseless field trip in it, when that wasn’t at all in the book. Also, the visit to the house was completely different. She wasn’t even introduced to the Volturi. They should have developed Edward and Bella’s relationship more, and kept the scenes they were using exactly like the book. With that said, let’s get back to the present. Because they did such a poor job developing the story, New Moon will more than likely be another disappointment. I really hope I am wrong, and that New Moon is geared around the book, but these rumors worry me. The wedding and honeymoon was my favorite aspect in the entire saga, and an absence of his desire to be married to Bella will devastate all Twilight fans. Why not give the fans what they really want, quit changing things and go with what we all love.

Why is Rob front and center (yes, I love him, but come on already).
Plus.. did you notice on the Twilight DVD the menu has just Rob standing alone in the woods. Then they gradually bring Kristen onto the screen. It’s so funny! They are completely switching around who the story is about. I guess because Rob gets all the fan girls. I just think it’s annoying that one of the few movies made with a female lead, from a female point of view, and they’ve switched it to Rob.

i think its perfect. its just an overview of the idea of the movie, jacob trys to replace edward but cannot because bella is so in love with edward. jacob is clearly trying to keep her from edward which is what he is trying to do the whole book, seeing that he despises him so much. and bella is looking out away from jacob like hes not even there. she does find comfort in him in the book. shes only in jacob’s arms cause she cant be in edwards. and edward is so seperate from them, but still there, just how he is forever in bella’s head when he is away. i think its perfect.
also, i agree that bella should be more focused on but edward is the looming and fasinating figure in all the books. bella would put him in the forefront if she had a say.

Jacob doesn’t like Edward and that shows in this poster. I’d like to see more longing or torment in Edward because even though he was the one who decided to leave, he’s suffering.
The poster is okay. Some of the fan posters were stronger. It’s my new wallpaper and I enjoy seeing it. Countdown to 11-20.

They could have done better…with that said I believe Edward and Jacob will get ample time in the script, even though they wrote much more of Edward in the script, it is still close/true to the book with just alittle creative interpetation. I read what was leaked online and if it is the real deal, we are in for a treat. SPOILER ALERT!! in the script i read, they did show us different points of view not just bellas. Like when edward calls the swan house to find out about bella, we see him in Rio De Jenero, we see his reaction–once again i will copy/paste SPOILER AHEAD .
Suddenly, the shrill RING of the phone makes them both jump. *Jacob, the closest to it, doesn’t move his face, just keeps *looking into her eyes as he reaches for the phone, answers –*
JACOB*
Swan residence.*
She smiles. But he instantly bristles, voice going cold.*
JACOB *
He’s not here. He’s at a funeral…*
Then the phone goes dead –*
INT. TENEMENT APARTMENT – RIO DE JANEIRO – SAME*
– Edward stares at his phone crazed, enraged, grief-*stricken — he HURLS it against the wall, shattering it. *
INT. BELLA’S HOUSE – LIVING ROOM – SAME*
– Jacob hangs up the phone.*

It is exactly what happens it the New Moon book, It is brilliant! I think this girl needs to realize that this is the way that new moon was written; Edward hardly had a part in it at all, he left, that is just the way it was, it was a choice that he made. And she may not like Taylor but he earned his place in this movie, he worked very hard not only in the gymn but I think in every aspect for this movie. I wasn’t a very big Taylor fan at first either but I think that he has earned our respect. Don’t get me wrong I really hope we see a lot of edward in this movie too but we have to be realistic, they have all told us ahead of time that this movie is going to be kind of depressing.

I’m Sorry But Taylor Lautner so DESERVES to be JACOB BLACK he earned it and anyway it wouldn’t be the same if they changed any of the actors it just wouldn’t be the same. I’m not a big Edward fan but if they would change him I wouldnt even bother watching noe likes it when movies change the charaters. As for the poster I’m not a big fan but as others has pointed out it kinna tell how the story is Jacob is trying to guide her i a different direction but all bella wants is edward.

I really don’t like this poster although Edward does look adorable. I am all about Edward and I suffered through New Moon until the end. It stinks to see her so close to Jacob in this poster. I am sure they did the poster this way to cause chatter because they know a majority of the fans loooooove Edward.

I respect your opinion, but I do not agree. The movie poster is perfect. Bella looks depressed but she is leaning (not in his arms as in holding, but leaning) on Jacob for support (for being depressed). Jacob looks protective as he should. He had to help Bella through her depression. He is strong and protective and it portrays well in the photo. Edward is great also, you can tell he is sad, but it looks like he is trying to stay strong and stay away from Bella (because that is what he feels is right).
The only thing that I dislike about the photo is Jacobs hair. Where is the wig? He is suppose to have long hair. My only complaint.
Now about the movie. There should be more Jacob then Edward. Edward was barely in the book, so he should barely be in the movie, no matter how many girls are drooling over him. Bella went through the pain without him, and the audience needs to feel that too. If they keep showing Edward, we wont feel the loss and pain Bella is feeling and this book is in her point of view. And her point of view = no Edward. Jacob needs to be in a lot of it because it will show the bond they have. We need to see them connect.
And about the hype this movie is getting. It deserves every hype it is receiving. The books are a great read. They are not the best written or story I have ever read, but it is one of my favorites and I reread the books all the time. I have been a fan of this series for 5 years when only Twilight was out, and i loved it and couldn’t wait for the next books to come out every year. I am so happy for Stephenie Meyer. She deserves it and she shows she is truly thankful for all her fans.
Now for the MTV awards. Sadly I will not be by a TV on the night it comes out, but I will be sure to YouTube it and watch it. I am so excited to get a little taste of what they are creating. These stories have been in my head for so long, that it is such a wonderful feeling seeing it on the big screen even if Twilight wasn’t the best movie I have ever seen. But it had a budget and that is understandable. Now that they have a bigger budget, I hope it will reach to one of the best movies I have seen. Fingers Crossed.

Pocketsize, you are right on. I agree with everything you said. The “Team Edward” “Team Jacob” stuff is pathetic and stupid.
Here is a sugegstion- Love the books, love ALL the characters and let them shine in their own spotlights at the correct time. New Moon is JACOB’S time.
Get over it people. I LOVE the poster. Its a true representation of THE BOOK, not your imagination of what actually happened.

I completely agree. Team Edward or Team Jacob doesn’t matter in the book through and through we all know Jacob had no chance. I’m also worried that the movie will make it more than it is completely going away from the pain and loss Bella felt. The one thing that I loved in New Moon was how well written her heartbreak was and how as a reader you could actually sympathize with her. The poster depicts something that might muddle the true story line.

I think it is important that we make the struggle between Edward and Jacob for Bella happen now so it can more fully develop the hardship of Bella choosing Edward in Eclipse. I do not believe that Edward and Bella’s relationship was developed enough in the first movie, but I think it will be showing up even more throughout the films. Especially Breaking Dawn. By the way I am Team Edward!

I 100% agree with you on everything you said!
New Moon is the only book I liked LESS than all the others because of the Edward absence and the Jacob presence!
And the poster shouldn’t have Bella in Jacob’s arms!
That’s just not right, haha.
Oh well…
I really hope this director does a hell of a better job than Catherine Hardwicke. She’s ridiculously horrible.
The best though, I think, will be the director of Eclipse: David Slade (director of 30 Days of Night – an amaaazing vampire movie for those of you who haven’t seen it!)
I can’t wait to see what he does with Eclipse.
As for New Moon…
I guess we will just have to wait and see, won’t we?

As much as I hate it, the poster is right on. I do not expect to see Edward much in the new movie (sucks) but that is the way it was in the book. I felt Bella’s pain word by word when I read the book and my only hope is that the director can translate that to film.

Like Kimberly, I respect what other people have to say about the poster, but I think everyone’s being altogether too harsh in their criticism. For heaven’s sakes! Are we going to react this way about everything Summit sends out? Every site I’ve been to w/this poster, there has been intense criticism going on. Personally, I think that Edward is absolutely perfect; physically and expression-wise. Secondly, Kristen DOES have a rather blank look, but she looks depressed. Thirdly, Jake is, well, just great. :)

i hate it. it’s like the person who made it didn’t even read the books. she would never be holding onto jacob. it would be a different story, if he was holding on to her. she should be in the middle reaching for edward (since he is all she thinks about during new moon) and jacob should be trying to hold her back. i also hate the paint like look the poster has. some of the fanmade ones are SOOOOOOOOOOOO much better.

I think the poster is O.K. It’s not the best picture I’ve ever seen in my life but who cares its just the poster anyway. However I do think if Kirsten Stewart had been looking more towards Robert Pattinson and made more of a longing expression instead of a blank one the poster would have had more emotional depth to it. But who knows they were probably all photo shopped into the same picture anyway, but shooting all three of them together would have been a better idea. Its kool though I guess.

Well i think the poster is great it shows everything from the book…
first bella looking depressed well she is depressed so y wouldnt they show its…..
second edward leave even though hes doesnt want to, he is longing to be with n to watch over her so him doing that in the poster is well perfect….
and thirdly wat i hear to be the most complaints is jacob hes holding bella because at the time she is left with nothin to her wen edward leaves n jacob “takes her into his arms” and helps her through this time with friendship!!! i think that shows alot n there is nothin wrong with it or jacob hes awsome

This poster is a really good representation of the New Moon story. It shows how Bella is using Jacob as a support when Edward suddenly exits her life. Jacob’s clenched fist indicates how he is trying to protect Bella from Edward whom he sees as a major threat to her. As for the color of the poster, I think it represents the shade of Bella’s mind perfectly. She is in a really dark place, questioning everything she ever thought was real between her and Edward. And the way she is looking away from Jacob also seems symbolic; she is holding on to Jacob, but is really looking for Edward, or at least her version of him.
Haha! Maybe I am reading too much into this and maybe I am just a cheezy romantic, lol…. but I think it’s a great poster and I am really hoping the movie can live up to the pressure it has been under.

I am also Team Edward, but like the poster. Bella isn’t actually in Jacob’s arms, she is behind him and touching him like she needs him for support. And that is exactly what happens in the book…she leans on Jacob to help her get over Edward. And I don;t think she should be in Edward’s arms because Edward is not there for her. As much as she would rather be in his arms she can’t, and it doesn’t make sense for them to make the movie poster with her in his arms. But that’s just my opinion

Obviously I am a huge fan of Jacob. I thought this poster did a great job in foreshadowing what the book/movie had to offer. Jacob looks AMAZING in this poster…and personally I would prefer the poster to just be a big picture of him and leave out the other two… ;)
I am hoping the movie does the book justice. I know some people were upset because they thought there wouldn’t be enough Edward in the movie since 3/4 of the book he is just a figment of her imagination, and I am worried that the movie studios are going to change the story too much to appease these people.
Stick to the books, they are golden!
Plus, Taylor Lautner stepped up his game to earn the part of Jacob for this movie, so everyone just relax and just enjoy the abs, the smile and of course, how much he loves Bella.
Can’t wait to see the movie!
p.s. Does anyone have any thoughts about the soundtrack??

I think its deliberately like that to mislead the viewers, which is actually pretty futile since most of us have read the book. movie looks unreal, cant wait the May 31st!!!

New Moon is very much about Bella getting over Edwards departure, and her growing friendship/almost romance with Jacob. Making a movie focusing on a character who was there for maybe 5 chapters through the whole book would be stupid because it wouldn’t convey the tone of the book at all.

The symbolism in this poster is very easy to decipher. In the novel, Bella clings onto Jacob for life. Literally. She was only healthy when she was around him. He became a huge part of her life. And yes, we all hate Jacob because he confused Bella with whom she truly loved, but of course she love-loves Edward. She only loves Jacob because he had been there for her when she was lost. Hence, I believe this movie poster is absolutely perfect.
