Kirk Cameron vs. Charles Darwin’s ‘Origin of Species’

posted by Esther Kustanowitz

still-growing-kirk-cameronpicforic.jpg

Those of you who haven’t followed Kirk Cameron since he was that lovable scamp Mike Seaver on “Growing Pains” might not be aware that the actor has most recently become a spokesperson for evangelical Christian initiatives, including his latest, coming just in time for Darwin Day.

On November 21, Darwin’s “Origin of Species” celebrates its 150th anniversary. In a video on YouTube, Cameron announced that he is circulating his own, newly edited version of Darwin’s seminal work – with a 50 page introduction that frames the intelligent design argument. His intentions are framed as concern for the widespread atheism among Americans which is “radically changing the culture of our nation.” This is possible because the book – like others copyrighted before 1923 – is now considered public domain.

Among the points made by the introduction are Darwin’s racism and “disdain for women,” as well as Hitler’s embrace of Darwinism. Cameron also notes that the introduction includes “balanced information from scientists who believe that God created the universe.” Cameron and crew intend to distribute 50,000 copies at 50 top universities, in the hope that they can present the “opposing, and correct, view” of creationism.

There’s at least one response video dispelling Cameron’s claims point-by-point, and there are certain to be others. Check out the video and let us know what you think.

Arguing with the anti-evolutionists is like arguing with the Flat Earth Society. It is a waste of time because they really don’t matter.

When half the nation I (don’t know about you) live in agrees with them, it seems a bit of a stretch to say they “really don’t matter”. The Ray “Bananaman” Comfort/Kirk Cameron duo wouldn’t have sold millions of books already and wouldn’t have the money to do this giveaway if they didn’t matter.

Let’s have a show of hands to see who wants to put a forward on the Bible and talk about critical thinking, historical myths, all the other messiahs that were born of a virgin, rode into town on a burrow, preached of their divinity, performed miracles, were crucified and were resurrected. (etc etc). At least our forward would be grounded in demonstrable fact.
These guys are so anti-intellect and anti-science it makes me sick.

In 1 Timothy 6:20, the Apostle Paul tells Timothy, “O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoiding profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of SCIENCE FALSELY SO CALLED.”
True science agrees with God’s Word – does NOT contradict it. College students deserve the right to be able to hear an alternative to atheistic evolution, which is unscientific to the MAX!

Poor form Mr. Cameron. A very dishonest and disrespectful handling of the “On The Origin of Species’ by Charles Darwin. His and others ignorant rants about evolution are truly pathetic. It is a sound theory that has powerful explanatory power. There are no ‘alternate theories’ that deserve any classroom time. And finally, there is no necessary conflict between the theory and Christian belief. Any more than between faith and germ theory or gravitation theory.

Good points all Steve. I find Kirk and company’s attempt to link Hitler to evolution theory esp humorous since the Origin of Species was written long before anyone cared about Hitler. He also was fond of breathing. Should we doubt that the idea to continue to take in oxygen is bad because of that.
Joy– Re the other messiah figures. I’ll do you better than 1, how about 3. #1 Dionysus born of a human mother and a god (Zeus). 400BC tradition. Descended into the underworld, raised his mother from the dead. Was reputed to have died himself and returned. Referred to by followers as “The Redeemer” and grape juice was often used to symbolize his blood…all before Christ. #2 Osiris — called king of kings, lord of lords, died and was resurrected…1400bc estimated writings interestingly gave followers a “creed” found on ancient parchment saying to follow his words to enter eternity (Heaven) said words promise they fed the hungry, and thirsty, and clothed the naked…very close wording to what is in Matthew 25 about the Judgement except the papyrus was written over 1000 years BEFORE Christ. #3 Krisna of the Buddah tradition 1200 BC, called “Our Lord and Savior” Crucified, died and reported to have been either resurrected or bodily taken to their version of heaven. He even is supposed to have told followers to do good for it’s own sake and not to expect their reward on earth. There are more examples of parallells in their stories (which all predate Christianity) as well as others I could point to. I was raised a Christian and have a Biology degree from a Catholic University (that teaches evolution because they see no problem in separating faith from tangible science theory…the two are not to be intertwined as they have different purposes and rules) but I can respect the fact that my chosen belief system is not unique and should NOT ask me to fear objective knowledge as most “creation science” seems to do.

I am not a believer in God. I do believe in possibilities. So I can not answer wether God created the universe or not. What is common ground though, should be the ability to choose. The ten commandments should not be posted publicly, as nude photo’s should not. Both would offend me personally. And we should not be offending anyone. I believe that healthy debate and discussions are ways to make educated choices. Kirk Cameron’s comment in the video that stated Hitler’s strong belief in Darwin’s view point is irrelevant. Did Hitler like bannana’s? Should I stop eating them? Anyways, read both sides, and not just those two view points, look at any other view you have available to you. Nobody is asking you to make a choice, just educate yourself. Although choosing not a side is a choice :-) Let’s agree, to disagree, move forward in our lives how we choose, and act with respect towards every person on this planet. We’re all in this together.

Kirk and company’s deceitful attempt to link Hitler to evolution theory is massbackwards. He would be much more learned and accurate to link Hitler to his own petty wrathful narcissistic God of the Jesusians for whom mass ignorance (euphemistically called ‘FAITH’) art the greatest virtue. Hitler twas raised by his parents as a believing Catholic who believed he twas doing his God’s righteous will…

Both Bush and Hitler believe that they were chosen by God to lead their nations. Why is it hard for you not to believe that God made the universe? answer this question for me to. Why do you believe in Hitler and bush are the same? I can answer this that Mr Bush believe in the Father God and Hilter god is of the devil or the god of darwinism. I am sorry to say that on his dieing bed his wife was a christian she lead him to christianity and he reannouce darwinism. Now who is a christian now.Darwin! that God was the real Father of the world. A fact that no one really knows. Also Hitler believe in witch craft and black arts, fortune tellers and kill him for being a jew. Another fact that know one really knows a bout this man. You must know the fact before you talk. Why not let them talk and be quiet listen to both sides then when finish then you decide. Who is right!Jackie,Derek and David. David your name comes from the most love king in the bible King David! A Jewish man was love by all in his Kingdom also love by God. If you dont believe me look it up in the bible for yourself. So! sit back and lets listen to both talk on the panel. Comment for the last. God Bless you! Kirk keep up the good work.

I used to be intimidated by the “scientists” who promote evolution as a fact. Then I learned a little more about the actual facts. None of the evoluionists’ theories are scientific. Even carbon dating isn’t correct because no one knows the condition of the material at its origin and no one knows the conditions, (ie temperature, wind, moisture, etc) around the material for the years or centuries that the material existed. So how can they know how old it is? That is called circular reasoning. There is so much more. Check it out for yourselves if you really want the TRUTH.

Darwin did not recant evolution. There is much more evidence that the story is a contrivance of evangelicals. More importantly…even if he DID recant, it would be immaterial since his ideas have been proven true. Darwin’s work was seminal, but is not even the most compelling work in the entire collection evolutionary evidences. We have many, unrelated fields of science that point to precisely the same conclusion…we are all descended from a common ancestor. Get over it! Evolution By Natural Selection is just about the most supported precept in science and is, for all intents and purposes, a fact. It is only the religiously inculcated that are ignorant of the full body of evidence [often willfully ignorant].

Mike, what do you mean that Darwin’s ideas have been proven true? 150 years later, Darwin’s THEORY of evolution is still just that – it’s a THEORY.

Well Tammy,
One needs to be understand what the term ‘theory’ means in the realm of science. Gravity is a theory. The sun-centered solar system is a theory. Evolution by Natural Selection [ENS] is a theory…and it always will be. There are aspects that have been empirically demonstrated to behave just as ENS would predict. There are myriad unrelated fields of science that arrive at precisely the same conclusion. The predictions made using ENS are spot on (the most telling characteristic of it being correct). I would suggest that you become familiar with the entire body of evidence for ENS. There are some excellent books out there that do just that. Try Coyne’s “Why Evolution is True” or Dawkins “The Greatest Show On Earth”
As anecdotal evidence; why do you think it is that EVERY BIOLOGIST IN THE WORLD believes in ENS?

There is no necessary connection between Darwin and Atheism. The arguments that connect them by Dawkins et. al. are compelling but not decisive. Even Dawkins admits that “he believes but cannot prove” the atheist implications of Darwin’s theory. (see New York Times 8/29/05). However, the theory itself, in its modern refinement, is the only biological theory that deserves serious consideration. Christians and other theists do themselves tremendous harm when they tie Darwin to atheism, and are try to defeat both.
If Darwin did become a Christian on his Deathbed, he would not have to give up his theory to do so.
