Dennis Hopper: 1936-2010

One of the great icons of the 60s, actor Dennis Hopper, died today after a long bout with prostate cancer. It is the second celebrity death this week, days after Gary Coleman’s passing. Hopper has always been a controversial figure on and off the screen, and I could certainly write a lengthy commentary on how I think Hopper and his peers have represented the best but also the very worst of what their generation supposedly symbolized from a moral and spiritual perspective. But on the eve of his death, I would rather spend time focusing on the positive, inspiring aspects of Hopper’s contribution to pop culture so I offer as a reflection two video clips. One is from one of my favorite movies, “Hoosiers”, and definitely Hopper’s best performance as Shooter, the alcoholic dad given a second chance on and off the court. The other clip is of an old performance of a poem Hopper recited often in public, “If” by Rudyard Kipling. The words are certainly worth reflecting on as we send our prayers out to his family and friends at this time.
