Anne Rice Further Explains Her Break Up with Christianity

Many Idol Chatter readers took great interest in Anne Rice’s announcement on facebook that she was separating herself from organized Christianity. She has now elaborated on that announcement through an interview over at Christianity Today. It’s a surprisingly lengthy interview and in it she goes in depth into some of her reasoning for her announcement and her own personal spiritual beliefs at this moment in time. However, I am not sure her comments will make people on either “side” of the Anne Rice camp particularly satisfied.
In the interview she insists she has not been hurt personally by any one person in the Catholic Church, refuses to say her beef with the Catholic Church has much to do with her son, a gay activist, even though she admits the Catholic Church’s stance on gay marriage is one of the final blows in her decision to step away from organized religion.
As far as future writing projects go, sorry fans, she still insists she will not return to writing vampire books but she also doubts she will return to her “Christ the Lord” book series either.
But for any of you that want to complete dismiss the idea Rice really is hanging on to a Christian worldview, she also discusses her interest in the teachings of modern Christian apologetic authors like N.T. Wright.
So does that clear anything/everything up for all of you RIce fans and all of you Rice detractors? Probably not. Which I think was maybe the real purpose of the interview after all.Because I think Rice knows there’s one thing pop culture followers love, and that’s an enigma.

I had the privilege of interviewing Anne Rice eighteen months ago. What I found fascinating then, and do so even more now, was the degree to which the ‘outcast’ metaphor comes into her story. She chose the vampire to represent the outcast in her novels, was Christianity’s outcast during her atheist days, and now has removed herself from the Christian fold again. I’ve written some thoughts about this on the ABC’s Religion and Ethics Online: http://www.abc.net.au/religion/articles/2010/08/10/2979141.htm
I don’t think Anne’s story is over. This is the latest chapter but a final page is still to come.

God spews religion out of His mouth…once we mortals realize that man inspired religion and its man inspired doctrines are empty, then we can move toward the “light” (true God) and be empowered by His truth and His statutes….and know His swcurity and peace in our lives….perhaps Ms. Rice is searching for truth in all of this.
