‘The Walking Dead’: Flesh-Eating Zombies for Halloween

posted by Donna Freitas

While I do enjoy a fun vampire/werewolf story now and then (or even more than now and then), I am not one of those people who loves the zombie. The whole flesh-eating, chunks of rotted skin falling off business is highly unappealing to me. And no matter how hard you try (and some folks who write young adult novels tried really, really hard to do this), you simply can’t ever make zombies and romance go together. I don’t care how cute the zombie is, again, flesh-eating and chunks of skin falling off will never, ever be romantic. But zombie fans abound and so do those who love post-apocalyptic worlds and stories to go with them. Put zombies and apocalypse together and you’ve got, well, a zombie-apocalypse! And this is exactly the combination that is behind AMC’s new series, ‘The Walking Dead’ which premieres, appropriately, this Halloween on Sunday at 10pm. The basics are (per AMC’s website) as follows:”Waking up in an empty hospital after weeks in a coma, County Sheriff Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) finds himself utterly alone. The world as he knows it is gone, ravaged by a zombie epidemic. The Walking Dead tells the story of the weeks and months that follow after the apocalypse.” Though I am not the biggest zombie fan, I’m kind of excited to at least watch the first episode (the first of six total since it’s technically a mini-series). Also promising is the fact that the show is based on a comic book/graphic novel series of the same name by Robert Kirkman. Check out the trailer to see if ‘The Walking Dead’ is your cup of undead tea:
