Vanity Fair's 'Proust' Now in Book Form

Vanity Fair magazine has a long tradition that's being made into a book. I suspect it'll be a movie before too long! There's just something wonderful and inspiring about getting to know other people better, whether it be stars, friends or even ourselves.

Readers of Vanity Fair know that the back page has long been given over to the "Proust Questionnaire," which asks personal questions of celebrities. The "Proust Questionnaire" dates back to an English parlor game in the 1800's, where--in a pre-TV society--Brits would gather and ask questions designed to reveal more of oneself than they otherwise might.

Vanity Fair took the idea and has been putting the questions to celebrities for decades, and now there is even an interactive version There is also an online interactive version where you can compare your answers to those of the stars.

Some of the best ones have now been compiled into the "Proust" book by Graydon Carter. Sometimes the answers seem contrived, sometimes authentic, and sometimes surprising. A sampling:

'Twilight''s Robert Pattinson is HOT: Oh Edward!

Robert Pattinson.vfcover.jpgReally: what's a day without gazing at "Twilight"'s Edward Cullen--I mean Robert Pattinson--and that gorgeous face of his. And those smoldering eyes! Can't forget the eyes. The moody look. That twisted smile.

Sigh. Okay. I'll stop. But really: want to brighten your day? Swoon a little as you anticipate the much awaited release of "New Moon" on November 20th? If you're Team Edward like me (boo for Team Jacob), then this endless article--yes, that's right, the COVER STORY!--in this month's Vanity Fair is a must read, see, and see, and see again. In "'Twilight''s Hot Gleaming" (emphasis on HOT), not only does Evgenia Peretz treat us to sigh-worthy tidbits about Edward (again, what I meant to say was Robert Pattinson), his life as the entire world's vampire heartthrob, what's up with the ever growing "Twilight" movie franchise, and other fun facts about his highness, but the best part is the online SLIDE SHOW: "The Robert Pattinson Portraits." Robert in a tie looking all moody. Robert in a cozy Irish knit sweater looking all moody. Robert in a white t, curled up with a pillow looking all moody.

You get the idea: Photos of Robert as Edward as moody vampire galore! Not to be missed. Do I sound a bit too excited? A tad ridiculous? I might. I don't care. I love my Edward. Well, you now what I mean.

'The Lovely Bones' as Ghost Story

I'd never really thought of Alice Sebold's bestselling novel "The Lovely Bones" as a ghost story--though to call it haunting is an understatement, too. But there is no getting around the fact that the story's protagonist, Susie Salmon, raped and killed at age 14, does become a ghost of sorts (when you really think about it), spending her afterlife in something like heaven, looking down on her family, watching them suffer her loss and agonizing over everyone's inability to uncover the mystery of her tragic disappearance and death.

the lovely bones.jpgApparently for Peter Jackson bringing "The Lovely Bones" to the big screen, this story is most certainly a ghost story, though of a different sort than he is accustomed. In "Not His Typical Ghost Story (or Movie)" Terrence Rafferty of the New York Times writes:

"Things that go bump -- and much, much worse -- in the night have never fazed Peter Jackson. Far from it. At this point in his career, two decades and counting, a film without some form of ghoulie, ghostie or long-leggedy beastie (preferably in quantity) just wouldn't seem like a Peter Jackson movie at all. So it's reassuring, in a disquieting sort of way, that his latest film, "The Lovely Bones," is a ghost story...The ghost in "The Lovely Bones"...isn't as alarming as the specters Mr. Jackson usually traffics in: she's a 14-year-old puzzled to have had her life ended abruptly by a neighborhood pervert, and she doesn't so much haunt her family as look after them, from the lofty, helpless perspective of the afterlife."

The fact that Peter Jackson is directing the movie may actually get me to the theater to see it. I will never forget reading this novel--I started it on an overnight transcontinental flight. This was a huge mistake. While everyone was shutting off lights to get some sleep, I was hooked so deep, so quickly that soon the light over my seat was the only one left illuminated on the entire plane. I read and read until the very end, feeling shattered, devastated, and angry upon finishing it. As much as I couldn't stop reading the book I felt hijacked by a story so upsetting I almost wished I'd never heard of it.

But boy was it powerful. The idea of seeing it on the big screen is daunting. Though, there is a certain pull for me about the way people interpret the afterlife, and this, perhaps, will not allow me to resist. And then, I love ghost stories, and it's hard to find one more moving than "The Lovely Bones."

Vampires: From Vicious Killers to Role Models?

TwilightpicIC.jpgA big shout out to Idol Chatter blogger and resident vampire fanatic Donna Freitas who was recently interviewed by two newspapers about the evolution of the fanged creatures.

In the Michigan-based newsletter The Macomb Daily she spoke about how vampires have moved away from being vicious and have begun trying to battle the dark within them.

"What's happened is that even these evil creatures are reaching for goodness," Donna said.

She also told Florida's The Oscala Star-Banner that the vampire "struggle is classic in humanity; it's a lot of what we do against our darker nature. To see it through them, fantasy creatures, adds a romantic quality."

Twilight 'New Moon' Cast Tour: Coming Soon to a Mall Near You!

New.Moon.poster.jpegDo you love Edward Cullen? Can you not get enough of Robert Pattinson's channeling of this vampire heartthrob? Or are you Team Jacob (boo!) and dream of Taylor Lautner at night?

Well, lucky you: to gear up for the November 20th release of 'New Moon,' the second movie in the Twilight Saga, the cast of New Moon is going on tour and may be coming soon to a mall near you. MTV just announced the following: "The "New Moon" cast will spread out nationwide from November 6 through 15, appearing at various malls in a move that echoes the crowd-pleasing festivities that accompanied spring's DVD release of the first film. In fact, the tour kicks off at Los Angeles' Hollywood & Highland complex, where hundreds of screaming fans greeted Ashley Greene in March."

And, since we all know that Stephenie Meyers loves her mood music, the tour will include spots with musicians and bands on the soundtrack, including "Death Cab for Cutie, Anya Marina, Sea Wolf and Band of Skulls."

Woohoo! I think I might see if I can make it to the last stop on the tour in NYC--I had a blast at the book release-concert party for "Breaking Dawn" so I'm guessing this might be even more fun. Nothing like even more Twilight mania to help everyone get excited for 'New Moon'! See the tour dates below:

» 11/6 Los Angeles @ Hollywood & Highland Center
» 11/8 Denver @ Park Meadows
» 11/9 Boston @ Natick Collection
» 11/9 Chicago @ Mall Location TBD
» 11/9 Washington, DC @ Fair Oaks Mall
» 11/10 Houston @ Houston Galleria
» 11/11 Minneapolis @ Mall of America
» 11/11 Philadelphia @ Cherry Hill Mall
» 11/11 San Francisco @ Stonestown Galleria
» 11/12 Atlanta @ Mall of Georgia
» 11/12 Seattle @ Westfield Southcenter
» 11/13 Miami @ Dadeland Mall
» 11/13 Phoenix @ Scottsdale Fashion Square
» 11/14 Salt Lake City @ Fashion Place
» 11/19 New York City @ Times Square
