As Father’s Day approaches, I’m reflecting on the inspiration that my own father has given me over the years. I’m lucky enough to have a great dad. He was there. He loved us. He loved Mom. He provided for his family and made us laugh.
Now, Mom is the person we went to with our troubles. If I fell down and scraped my knee, it was more natural to get a hug from Mom. My dad, as great as he is, has never been one for sympathy. However, he’s great at giving this one singular piece of advice:
This too shall pass.
I remember many times growing up when that would be his answer for everything. And I didn’t get it then. I thought he was being nonchalant about my troubles. Of course, now I see there is tremendous wisdom in those four little words.
Misery can be all consuming. When tragedy strikes, the subsequent depression surrounds you until it’s all you can see, breathe and feel. It can be tough to see a way out of it. It wasn’t until I had a few life events knock me down that I realized how powerful it was to know that this too shall pass. Every rough patch, broken heart or bout of the blues will eventually go away. Time moves on and drags you along with it. Nothing lasts forever.
Also, its brilliance is that it also swings the other way. When we encounter those moments of joy, it’s important to remember that they too will pass. So be grateful for the good times, because one day they’ll be gone.
This too shall pass… ancient words of wisdom that still ring true today. Thanks, Dad. It wasn’t the only piece of advice you gave us, but it was the one that counts the most.

I just lost my Father on May 1st and so this will be my first Fathers Day without him being here. My dad was AWESOME! He like your dad Loved his family, he and my mom just Celebrated their 59th Anniversary April 15th. As a Believer I know I will see my DAD again someday when God call me HOME TOO! Thanks for sharing your story about your dad.

I really enjoyed reading your post! My father was similar in so many ways. VERY FUNNY,PROVIDER,SHARP,GREAT TEACHER AND A FRIEND OF SO MANY! I see so much of my father in my brothers! LOL! I am the youngest of 10 and i think that being the youngest was the greatest because i saw it all. Good and not so Good! Just knowing in every situations my father would always make it work out. I know what he was teaching me! “YOU ARE NEVER DEFEATED IN ANY SITUATION BECAUSE YOUR FATHER IS ALWAYS THERE TO SEE ME THROUGH” He taught me and let me see how he always got us through! WOW! He to knew that his father would always be there and get him through! And i truely understand NOW that it wasnt him! It was the Faith and Love that he had in HIS FATHER GOD JESUS CHRIST! THAT HE KNEW WOULD ALWAYS BRING HIM THROUGH!

Actually, upon reading this post, my tears are falling. I just can’t help my self but cry, because it has been ages I never greeted my father as what most of the children do on this very special day!
I could say that I am belong to an ordinary family, wherein casual greetings during special day is not really emphasize or not even practice!Even to say ” I love you” to my parents is not really practice, it seems that saying this word is like a word ” Silence” that if you’ll say something it can break it.
But deep inside,we express our thankfulness through actions, touches and by gestures to all the gratitude given by HIM.
God knows how much I loved my Dad.Through this inspirational blog, I hope I could extend my greetings to my Dad even if he can read it.
” Pa, Happy Fathers Day!” and I love you!
