Colt McCoy wasn’t supposed to play much, if any, during his rookie NFL season. But injuries to the other Cleveland Browns quarterbacks forced the Texas native into action and in the process showed the doubters that he could win at any level.

In his new book Growing Up Colt, McCoy writes alongside his father Brad McCoy about the life lessons that helped him emerge from a tiny town and develop into not just a premier college quarterback and NFL prospect, but a young man of great character.

Inspiring Athletes had the chance to talk to McCoy and the conversation (at least on his end) was captured on video. McCoy talked about transitioning from college to pro ball, how his small town roots shaped him, what lessons he learned from his parents, and the role faith plays in his life:
