Today in Charlotte, NC, the NASCAR Hall of Fame will be inducting its third class. Among those five additions to the Hall are championship driver Darrell Waltrip, legendary crew chief Dale Inman and long-time team owner Glen Wood of the Woods Brothers. They will be joined by inductees Cale Yarborough and Richie Evans.

Waltrip is now a prominent member of the NASCAR broadcasting community with his work as an analyst for both Fox Sports and Speed Channel. He won 84 career Cup races (including the 1989 Daytona 500) and Cup championships in 1981, 1982 and 1985. Inspiring Athletes has been privileged to sit down with Waltrip while discussing such topics as the founding of Motor Racing Outreach, the history of faith within the sport and keeping success in its proper perspective.

“At some point, we’ve all realized there’s a lot more in life than just winning races,” Waltrip said. “I hear that a lot. As I was becoming successful, I’d listen to other athletes and they’d say, ‘Well I had it all, but there was something missing.’ There’s always that, ‘There’s something missing.’ It’s that void you have in your life when you don’t know the Lord. You’re real selfish and everything is focused on you and how you feel until you realize there is something missing and that’s your relationship with Jesus Christ.”

Working closely with Richard Petty, Inman was a key component in eight Cup titles (including seven for the King) and 193 race wins. He is often credited as the first to fill the position that eventually became known as the crew chief and is the first crew chief to be inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame.

Wood made his name as a car owner along with brothers Leonard, Delano, Clay and Ray Lee. The Woods Brothers have won 98 Cup races and five Daytona 500′s. The famed #21 car’s most recent trip to victory lane was at the 2011 Daytona 500 thanks to the surprising performance of 20-year old rising star Trevor Bayne.
