Zarley Lectures

Monday October 29, 2007

Categories: Education

Randall Balmer, professor at Columbia University, will be on campus at NPU today to give the Zarley Lectures. Balmer is an expert on American religious history and has become a specialist on the relationship of evangelicalism to cultural forces -- and things are changing.. The lectures, Monday and Tuesday at 3:30 at the chapel at North Park, are open to the public. Here are few of my favorites of his books:

I think what I like about Randy Balmer's work the most is the way he can hold evangelicalism in his hand and inspect it from a variety of angles.

The first book of Balmer's that I read was his joyous romp across America to investigate the diversity of evangelicalism; this book was the foundation then for a TV program. Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory

Randy's most recent book, and the basis for his lectures at NPU, is a book that examines the relationship of American evangelicalism to American politics. Thy Kingdom Come

And here is his standard reference book that could be placed in all church libraries. Encyclopedia of Evangelicalism

What I like about Randy Balmer is the way he can hold a jacket over his shoulder ...

If I didn't have University Choir this afternoon I'd be there! I'll be at the one tomorrow, though. I can't wait!

Anyone seen the cover story in Sunday's NY Times magazine section? Ahhh... those changing evangelicals! Check it out. Can't wait to hear more on this lecture.

The NY Times article was very interesting reading.

Perhaps Jesus' favorite color was purple after all...
