Acts of Advent 13

posted by Scot McKnight | 12:10am Wednesday December 17, 2008

Notice how Zechariah’s vision of what God is about to do on the First Advent was completely shaped by building the community of God in this world:

67 His father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied:
68 “Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel, because he has come and has redeemed his people.
69
He has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David 70 (as he said through his holy prophets of long ago),
71
salvation from our enemies and from the hand of all who hate us- 72 to show mercy to our fathers and to remember his holy covenant, 73 the oath he swore to our father Abraham:
74
to rescue us from the hand of our enemies, and to enable us to serve him without fear 75 in holiness and righteousness before him all our days.

Zechariah sees God about to do a marvelous work:

* redeeming God’s people
* through the horn of salvation
* which means “salvation from our enemies” and “from the hand of all who hate us”
* which means mercy to our fathers and the Abrahamic covenant people
* which means rescue from the hand of our enemies
* so God’s people, Israel, could serve/worship in holiness and righteousness.

Good grief: everywhere it’s the rescue and redemption of Israel, God’s people. Christmas is about God’s people being liberated.

Our Common Prayerbook 30 - 3
Psalm 30 thanks God (vv. 1-3, 11-12) and exhorts others to thank God (vv. 4-5). Both emerge from the concrete reality of David's own experience. Here is what that experience looks like:Step one: David was set on high and was flourishing at the hand of God's bounty (v. 7a).Step two: David became too

Theology After Darwin 1 (RJS)
One of the more important and more difficult pieces of the puzzle as we feel our way forward at the interface of science and faith is the theological implications of discoveries in modern science. A comment on my post Evolution in the Key of D: Deity or Deism noted: ...this reminds me of why I get a

Almost Christian 4
Who does well when it comes to passing on the faith to the youth? Studies show two groups do really well: conservative Protestants and Mormons; two groups that don't do well are mainline Protestants and Roman Catholics. Kenda Dean's new book is called Almost Christian: What the Faith of Ou

Let's Get Neanderthal!
The Cave Man Diet, or Paleo Diet, is getting attention. (Nothing is said about Culver's at all.) The big omission, I have to admit, is that those folks were hunters -- using spears or smacking some rabbit upside the conk or grabbing a fish or two with their hands ... but that's what makes this diet

sounds familiar, it is the Exodus story again, Moses kept saying to pharoah, let my people go so they can worship God in the desert.
what does rescue from the hand of our enemies mean? I get God’s mercy, I get faithfulness to the covenant, i get freedom to worship in holiness and righteousness.
But i don’t get the part about being rescued from the hand of our enemies. (I have some thoughts but that seems so confusing because Christ did not do that literally but spiritually it appears).
