January and Sports

posted by Scot McKnight | 12:10am Saturday January 3, 2009

What makes January such a good month for sports?

1. Nope, not because we have hour to hour college bowl games between teams I don’t follow.
2. Nope, not because the Bears are out of the playoffs and that means we can watch better teams.
3. Nope, not because we can start gearing up for the Super Bowl.
4. Nope, not because NCAA college basketball now picks up the pace.

5. Yep, because in this cold we can think that in about six weeks the boys of summer will begin to gather in Florida and Arizona for Spring Training and begin, yet once again, the long gentle journey toward October … the World Series. (Actually, the NLCS … when baseball climaxes and then slides into a series with the American league and their silly form of baseball.)

Our Common Prayerbook 30 - 3
Psalm 30 thanks God (vv. 1-3, 11-12) and exhorts others to thank God (vv. 4-5). Both emerge from the concrete reality of David's own experience. Here is what that experience looks like:Step one: David was set on high and was flourishing at the hand of God's bounty (v. 7a).Step two: David became too

Theology After Darwin 1 (RJS)
One of the more important and more difficult pieces of the puzzle as we feel our way forward at the interface of science and faith is the theological implications of discoveries in modern science. A comment on my post Evolution in the Key of D: Deity or Deism noted: ...this reminds me of why I get a

Almost Christian 4
Who does well when it comes to passing on the faith to the youth? Studies show two groups do really well: conservative Protestants and Mormons; two groups that don't do well are mainline Protestants and Roman Catholics. Kenda Dean's new book is called Almost Christian: What the Faith of Ou

Let's Get Neanderthal!
The Cave Man Diet, or Paleo Diet, is getting attention. (Nothing is said about Culver's at all.) The big omission, I have to admit, is that those folks were hunters -- using spears or smacking some rabbit upside the conk or grabbing a fish or two with their hands ... but that's what makes this diet

Absolutely! I can’t wait for the pitchers and catchers to report and start reading the scouting reports incessantly and figure out which line ups would be best for lefties and righties. Man, I miss baseball season.

Just under six weeks until pitchers and catchers report. I can’t wait…we’re moving in a few weeks to a part of Asia where I can get satellite TV and hopefully the new MLB channel.
Of course Art (Red Sox) and Scot (Cubs) have more hope for this season than I (Rangers). There was a time when the Rangers acted like they were in a big market (we actually have the #5 baseball market in America, and a very consistent fan base) and one of the better TV deals, and would spend with the big boys (in fact we had the top payroll once back in the ARod years). Now, hovering around 60 million, with a fourth of that in the rapidly declining Michael Young, I’m sad to say that we will be in the bottom seven or eight payrolls in the league. At least we have the top farm system in the game by most accounts! But I hate waiting for 2011 and suffering through our sixth or seventh “rebuilding year” in a row.

Scot, your incessant dissing of the American League is so contradictory to the spirit of this blog. Let’s try loving our neighbors just a bit more, shall we? :-)
Go White Sox!

January and sports is great because of HOCKEY!! How could you not love the oudoor game played at Wrigley between the Redwings and Blackhawks. Outstanding. Forget about guys trying to hit a ball with a bat, try skating on ice, while being hit, trying to get a piece of frozen rubber past a massive goalie. That is sports.
Oh, and if you have to watch baseball… go Mariners.

Silly form of baseball? I prefer to think of it as emergent.

Love the post, I was with MIke Wickham today down in San Diego for the Chargers game and we can’t wait until Feb 14 when Pitchers/Catchers and Wickham report for Spring Training. After a disastrous 3 game playoff run for the Cubs this year (i was at Dodger Stadium out here for Game 3 and was depressed for maybe a month afterwards) I am looking forward to the Cubs making their World Series run. Remember Scot, according to a fine research paper done by a certain former student, Jesus is a Cubs fan. -josh

timellison,
Most elements of a baseball game is much better than all of hockey, that’s for sure!

Scot – I tend to think it is much simpler than that – in Illinois in January, what the heck else are we going to do but watch sports?

Part of me was sad when my Colts lost. But after a good nights rest I came to my senses and began thinking of the arrival of pitchers and catchers- the true beginning of Spring. Go Cubs!
