Our Common Prayerbook 30 - 3
Psalm 30 thanks God (vv. 1-3, 11-12) and exhorts others to thank God (vv. 4-5). Both emerge from the concrete reality of David's own experience. Here is what that experience looks like:Step one: David was set on high and was flourishing at the hand of God's bounty (v. 7a).Step two: David became too

Theology After Darwin 1 (RJS)
One of the more important and more difficult pieces of the puzzle as we feel our way forward at the interface of science and faith is the theological implications of discoveries in modern science. A comment on my post Evolution in the Key of D: Deity or Deism noted: ...this reminds me of why I get a

Almost Christian 4
Who does well when it comes to passing on the faith to the youth? Studies show two groups do really well: conservative Protestants and Mormons; two groups that don't do well are mainline Protestants and Roman Catholics. Kenda Dean's new book is called Almost Christian: What the Faith of Ou

Let's Get Neanderthal!
The Cave Man Diet, or Paleo Diet, is getting attention. (Nothing is said about Culver's at all.) The big omission, I have to admit, is that those folks were hunters -- using spears or smacking some rabbit upside the conk or grabbing a fish or two with their hands ... but that's what makes this diet

Babe Ruth? I’m always amused when we attack the recent ages as though they are steroid tainted but past decades were not.
I read about one of these speculative steroid abusing guys who showed up to spring training much larger than the previous season, so much that it caused the local paper to write an article on his increased size. The team was amazed by his upgraded power hitting, but dismayed by his fits of rage, and random crying in the locker room. As the season progressed he even began loosing hair and having strange appetite changes. After this season he slimmed down and never performed at that level again…but his life was somewhat back to normal otherwise. Of course, despite all this, nobody ever accused Roger Maris of steroid abuse even though they had been used in professional sports for over 30 years before 1961.
Tom House said that steroids were “rampant” throughout bullpens in the 1970s and that he even used HgH on occassion. He didn’t see the problem with it and even suggested steroids to some of his pitchers once he became a pitching coach.
Nolan Ryan was declining in velocity during his last years in Houston. Then, in the late 80s he goes to Texas, someone is able to reclaim his declining fastball despite surpassing 40. He was outstanding for the Rangers even claiming two more no-hitters. Who was his pitching coach? It was Tom House, who was so instrumental in the rebirth that Ryan thanked him for restarting his career during his Hall of Fame speech.
Even Hank Aaron in his autobiography claims that there was one season that he literally wouldn’t have made it through without greenies (amphetamines). That might not be a steroid, but if it enables you to finish a season that you wouldn’t have been able to finish otherwise, then it’s definitely a performance enhancer.
Anyways…I think you get the point.
