Prayer of the Week: 5th Week of Lent

posted by Scot McKnight | 12:22am Sunday March 29, 2009

Almighty God, you alone can bring into order the
unruly wills and affections of sinners: Grant your people grace to love
what you command and desire what you promise; that, among the swift and
varied changes of the world, our hearts may surely there be fixed where
true joys are to be found; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and
reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Our Common Prayerbook 30 - 3
Psalm 30 thanks God (vv. 1-3, 11-12) and exhorts others to thank God (vv. 4-5). Both emerge from the concrete reality of David's own experience. Here is what that experience looks like:Step one: David was set on high and was flourishing at the hand of God's bounty (v. 7a).Step two: David became too

Theology After Darwin 1 (RJS)
One of the more important and more difficult pieces of the puzzle as we feel our way forward at the interface of science and faith is the theological implications of discoveries in modern science. A comment on my post Evolution in the Key of D: Deity or Deism noted: ...this reminds me of why I get a

Almost Christian 4
Who does well when it comes to passing on the faith to the youth? Studies show two groups do really well: conservative Protestants and Mormons; two groups that don't do well are mainline Protestants and Roman Catholics. Kenda Dean's new book is called Almost Christian: What the Faith of Ou

Let's Get Neanderthal!
The Cave Man Diet, or Paleo Diet, is getting attention. (Nothing is said about Culver's at all.) The big omission, I have to admit, is that those folks were hunters -- using spears or smacking some rabbit upside the conk or grabbing a fish or two with their hands ... but that's what makes this diet

Dear God,
I am very weary because all my bills have pilled up on me and I don’t know what to do. I pray and pray and just when I think that everyting is going to work out, I am back where I started from. My son does not have a job and I hae two household to support. Dear Lord, I need a financial belssing urgently. I owe so many people who have trusted me with their money and now I have a hard time paying them back. I promise them a date and when the date comes up I don’t have enough money to go around. I go to Church every Sunday that I am able to go and pray at the alter before the service starts, trusting in your holy words, there Lord. I know that you will bring me through. I just need it now. I am asking that everyone keep me and my family in your prayers. May God Bless each and everyone of you. Amen

All Praises and Glory to the Father who has kept me. Give praise and thanksgiving no matter what you are going through. I know times are rough, but it could be worse. When I think about the saying my mom told me as a child, that I have come to recite constantly, constanly “I was sad because I had no shoes, but then I looked next to me and saw the man with no feet”. I give Praises and thanksgiving to God our Father for my feet and making a way out of no way. Gods time not mine.
