Some of you know we were at
North Point Community Church last weekend for the Sunday services. I was asked by the lead pastor, Andy Stanley, and the good folks there to speak about the Jesus Creed -- and I took yet another approach to the Jesus Creed by looking at the challenge of following Jesus by converting everyday
people into everyday
neighbors. It was Jesus' commitment to living out the Jesus Creed that led to making folks neighbors, and then I asked folks to think about creative ways they can turn everyday "peeps" into everyday neighbors. The clever folks at NPCC gave me a can of Coke to open at the end of the teaching time as a symbol of Jesus' "cup of cold water" teachings. Then they gave everyone who wanted a Coke a free one as they left the building. (Cool idea I thought.)
As always, it's an honor to be at NPCC and it begins for me with two leaders -- Andy Stanley, with whom I was honored to spend quite a bit of time Sunday morning, and then Bill and Terry Willitts, with whom we dined and got to catch up on new things about life. We love these folks and admire the robust gospel work at North Point. (We miss some friends from there who are now at:
New Denver Church.)
The words of James 5:1-6 are strong words, some of the strongest criticism of the rich in the entire Bible, and they are addressed at the rich for their oppression of the poor.
Now listen, you rich people, weep and wail because of the misery that is coming upon you. Your wealth has rotted, and moths have eaten your clothes. Your
gold and silver are corroded. Their corrosion will testify against you
and eat your flesh like fire. You have hoarded wealth in the last days. Look! The
wages you failed to pay the workmen who mowed your fields are crying
out against you. The cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of
the Lord Almighty. You have lived on earth in luxury and self-indulgence. You have fattened yourselves in the day of slaughter. You have condemned and murdered innocent men, who were not opposing you.

One of James' themes is the brevity of riches and possessions. He brings it up in James 1:10-11:
"But the one who is rich should take pride in his low position, because he will pass away like a wild flower. For
the sun rises with scorching heat and withers the plant; its blossom
falls and its beauty is destroyed. In the same way, the rich man will
fade away even while he goes about his business." And he brings it up again in 4:13-17. A powerful way to critique oppression and indulgence and a life dedicated to money and possessions is to gain a powerful vision of the brevity of life and wealth.

For those who don't know this, this post is written by our friend "RJS," a professor in the sciences at a leading American university. She regularly posts here about issues intersecting science and faith.
Last week in A Fine Tuned Universe 3 I posted on Augustine and his view of creation. Augustine's conviction that science and reason cannot conflict in any foundational way with the faith is expressed in his work The Literal Meaning of Genesis
:
When they are able, from reliable evidence, to prove some fact of
physical science, we shall show that it is not contrary to our
Scripture. But when they produce from any of their books a theory
contrary to Scripture, and therefore contrary to the catholic faith,
either we shall have some ability to demonstrate that it is absolutely
false, or at least we ourselves will hold it so without any shadow of a
doubt. (Vol. 1 CH. 21:41)
But some things are outside the pale of orthodox Christian belief. None of us really deny this. One of the comments on the last post noted that Augustine's view of the doctrine of original sin, causes the most significant conflict for many of us today. This came up again in an e-mail I received dealing with the doctrines of Adam, Eve, and Original Sin. The letter writer sent the following (and I quote excerpts with permission):
I went through considerable emotional turmoil when a Presbyterian pastor I respect responded to my statement that I am not sure that the human race descended from a single pair and that I believed descent from more than one pair is not necessarily in conflict with biblical teaching. This pastor declared that my views are "outside the pale" of Christianity, not just Reformed Christianity, but all Christianity (including Roman Catholic doctrine), and that if I were to attend his church, he would consider me like the Oneness Pentecostals who deny the Trinity. I am not a Christian, even if I am a nice guy. He qualified by saying that he cannot judge my state before God, but doctrinally I am not a Christian.
The letter writer went on to note that this "pastor is generally a model of charity and would not say what he said if he did not feel conscience-bound to do so." This letter poses the question I would like to consider today.
Is any position other than monogenesis of the human race with Adam and Eve as unique historical individuals outside the pale of orthodox Christianity?
This a brief excerpt from another Beliefnet.com blog, called Science and the Sacred, by Darrel Falk. OK, we're all really proud that Falk begins by giving kudos to RJS for her posts on science and faith on Jesus Creed.
I have been a biologist for a long time, and I hope I never stop
getting shivers in my spine when I think about the beauty of how we
come to know things in biology. Biologists make predictions, then they
go out into the field or the lab to see if their predictions hold up.
When hundreds of predictions of this sort are fulfilled, a theory
reaches the point where it becomes certain, at least on a broad level.
And that is where we are with evolution.
In this space, our purpose is not so much to try to persuade as it
is to explain why we are so certain God created this way. If you wish
to join us as we explore the ramifications, we would love to have you
with us in the coming days. If you think that all of biology has it
wrong, that is your prerogative. You're still welcome to read and think
along with us. A great place to start is the book by Neil Shubin--it is
very accessible to the general audience regardless of science
background. Once you've read that, irrespective of what you personally
believe, you'll understand why most Christian biologists view evolution
as being God's way of creating life's diversity. It is my prayer that
you may even see why the beauty in all of this draws us to our knees in
worship.

Let's give it up for our local worship bands and leaders. Followers of Jesus love to sing and love to bring both their worship and their message into song ... and our worship bands are often the leaders in guiding us in our gatherings into those songs. This morning I listened to the excellent CD of
Todd Fields, worship leader at North Point Community Church. We've participated in a number of services when Todd was leader, and so we're grateful to have his new CD. Kris and I have an advantage in traveling: we get to experience worship leaders and bands all over the place. But I've got a suggestion today:
I'd like to hear you express your appreciation for worship leaders and bands. What would you like them to know?
A case can be made that the two most socially revolutionary passages in the New Testament are (1) Mary's Magnificat in Luke 1:69-75 and (2) James' potent criticism of the rich farmers in James 5:1-6. I quote James 5 in...
