Jesus Creed

Your favorite Michael Jackson video?

posted by Scot McKnight | 1:41pm Friday June 26, 2009

MJ.jpgI have to admit I prefer his dancing (and leaning) in Smooth Criminal.

When Kris and I were teenagers the Jackson Five songs were hits. When our kids were young we watched the video of “We are the World” with our kids, and we sung that song often.

His larger than life personality and life deconstructed and it was sad to watch. I think of Johnny Cash, whose life was from one extreme to another but who seemed to come out of it. But Michael reminds me of Elvis — a recluse whose life unraveled. Sad.

I tire of the news media milking everything they know and dragging the story out for as long as possible.

Our prayers are for his family.

Our Common Prayerbook 30 - 3
Psalm 30 thanks God (vv. 1-3, 11-12) and exhorts others to thank God (vv. 4-5). Both emerge from the concrete reality of David's own experience. Here is what that experience looks like:Step one: David was set on high and was flourishing at the hand of God's bounty (v. 7a).Step two: David became too

Theology After Darwin 1 (RJS)
One of the more important and more difficult pieces of the puzzle as we feel our way forward at the interface of science and faith is the theological implications of discoveries in modern science. A comment on my post Evolution in the Key of D: Deity or Deism noted: ...this reminds me of why I get a

Almost Christian 4
Who does well when it comes to passing on the faith to the youth? Studies show two groups do really well: conservative Protestants and Mormons; two groups that don't do well are mainline Protestants and Roman Catholics. Kenda Dean's new book is called Almost Christian: What the Faith of Ou

Let's Get Neanderthal!
The Cave Man Diet, or Paleo Diet, is getting attention. (Nothing is said about Culver's at all.) The big omission, I have to admit, is that those folks were hunters -- using spears or smacking some rabbit upside the conk or grabbing a fish or two with their hands ... but that's what makes this diet

Of course…
‘Thriller’ was an awesome video!
Was a little scary when I saw it as a kid though :)

The first thing I thought of when I heard he had died was “Never Can Say Goodbye.” My sister played his songs all the time when we were in our teens. I’ve had his music in my mind all day.
And I’m tired of the media too. Turned it off.

As pre-teens, my brother and I persuaded Mom to let us eat as a family in front of the television, so we wouldn’t miss the world premier of the Thriller video. Not sure what Mom thought of it. But I remember thinking, “This is great!”
A few years ago, my 6-year-old daughter when to a Hallowe’en party put on by one of the kids in her grade 1 class. They showed the video. As I vainly tried to get her to sleep that night, I remember thinking, “This is not so great!” But that didn’t stop me from watching it again on Youtube later that evening.
I pray that MJ will find the healing and grace in the arms of his Saviour now, things which escaped him in life.

I gotta say Scot, I’m in complete agreement with you. The dancing and leaning in Smooth Criminal – along with the fact that it’s his best song – gets my vote for his best video.

Dirty Diana. But the song made the video.

“Rock with you”, curiously,is my fav MJ video. It is not one of his theatrical, stylish one’s but highlights his talent and the pure joy of performing.

I think I was about 8 when the Jackson Five started appearing on TV. Loved them instantly.
Loved Smooth Criminal too, but this song is my all time favorite:

My favorite Michael Jackson video is “Speed Demon.” Remember that one where, at the end, he dances with the claymation rabbit? You gotta love dancing claymation rabbits!

Have you seen the cover of smooth criminal by the punk band Alien Ant Farm? One of my favorite videos, though I’m not exactly sure why.
