I don't know about you, but I like to study in my own library, which happens to be in the basement. Here is Kris working on the computer in my library ... books galore and quiet in abundance and homemade bookshelves and books in the order I need them.
Where do you prefer to study or read or write?

We turn now to Acts 4 in our quest to read the Book of Acts together as we probe the missional theology of this early Christian witness to what God was doing -- through the apostles -- and through the community -- to bring the gospel of Jesus Christ to the entire world. As we read the Book of Acts in search of missional theology, we are reading
The Acts of the Apostles (Abingdon New Testament Commentaries)
as our guide.
One key word in missional theology is
witness. Peter was a "witness" to the gospel, and how Peter understands the substance or content of his gospel is so important. Here are the first 12 verses of Acts 4:
The priests and the
captain of the temple guard and the Sadducees came up to Peter and John
while they were speaking to the people. They
were greatly disturbed because the apostles were teaching the people
and proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection of the dead. They seized Peter and John, and because it was evening, they put them in jail until the next day. But many who heard the message believed, and the number of men grew to about five thousand.
The next day the rulers, elders and teachers of the law met in Jerusalem. Annas the high priest was there, and so were Caiaphas, John, Alexander and the other men of the high priest's family. They had Peter and John brought before them and began to question them: "By what power or what name did you do this?"
Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them: "Rulers and elders of the people! If we are being called to account today for an act of kindness shown to a cripple and are asked how he was healed, then
know this, you and all the people of Israel: It is by the name of Jesus
Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified but whom God raised from the
dead, that this man stands before you healed. He is
" 'the stone you builders rejected,
which has become the capstone. Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved."

Kolakowski, a Polish philosopher who weakened Marxism's grip on Eastern Europe,
recently died. Few, I suspect, knew who he was. I consider myself fortunate to
have read some of Kolakowski, one book being his scintillating sketch of the
history of ideas by probing the central idea of twenty-three thinkers. That
book is called Why Is There Something Rather Than Nothing?: 23 Questions from Great Philosophers
. My own reading of that book impressed me again with
the connection of philosophers with their world. From Socrates to Kierkegaard,
philosophers are products of their day.
So
are we.
Which raises the profound problem of blinders when it comes to
perceiving what is influencing us, and which raises the other profound problem
of needing to understand our cultural blinders in order to break through them
with the light of the gospel. Kolakowski's chapters are short, and everything
short when it comes to the history of ideas risks simplicities that mask
nuance. I risk the same in what I am about to suggest: that the current generation emerges out of a toxic combination of
modernity and postmodernity.

In John Walton's (professor at Wheaton) new book,
The Lost World of Genesis One: Ancient Cosmology and the Origins Debate, we have yet another proposition to discuss:
The difference between origin accounts in science and Scripture is metaphysical in nature.
Many folks, Walton argues, think of the "origins" question as a pie: some pieces are "natural" and some pieces are "supernatural." The more we learn, one needs to observe, the fewer are the number of supernatural pieces. The problem: the ancients did not distinguish between primary causes and secondary causes, between God at work and between nature at work.
Instead of pie, we need to see it all as a cake with layers. Lower layer: science. Top layer: God. The lower layer then represents secondary natural causation and the top divine causation. Science cannot explain the top layer.
Ultimate causes cannot be determined by science. "Empirical science is not designed to to be able to define or detect a purpose, though it may ... theoretically ... deduce ... that purpose" (116). And "biological evolution can acknowledge no purpose" but neither can it contend that there is no purpose.
Genesis is a top layer account, concerned with teleology (purpose), yet open to all kinds of explanations of the bottom layer. In Walton's view, what is the teleology of Genesis 1?But this is like a fish saying there is only water and that there is no such thing as mountains or air or trees. There is a difference between naturalism (natural explanation) and materialism (that only the material exists).

We are concerned about 20somethings, or iGens, and this blog is devoted to discussions that can help with ministry to 20somethings. I am excited about two recent books I've read. So, in about a week we will begin discussions about how ancient saints can help postmoderns and then another discussion about the Third Way (beyond emerging and traditional). To aid us in these conversations, we will be reading:
Chris R. Armstrong,
Patron Saints for Postmoderns: Ten from the Past Who Speak to Our Future
.
Jim Belcher,
Deep Church: A Third Way Beyond Emerging and Traditional
