It may just be a bad angle, but don’t you think the artist should’ve thought of that in the first place? Like the title of this post says: “Bad idea or bad design?” If there was ever any chance that someone viewing the sculpture/statue could see it from this angle, then it should’ve been altered in the design stage. I would hope that seeing it from the side you wouldn’t think of any other meaning than what was intended. I’m sure it was created with the right heart though. I don’t think MPT is judging the artist’s heart here.

My undergraduate college had this statue as a key piece at one of their main entrances. Of course, the emphasis is on servant leadership. (The degree to which the school met this is a different discussion, but they put it out there as a frontpiece of what they were striving for). The students (myself included) knew that if you looked at it from this one bad angle, it could be a bit…ahem…misinterpreted. However, I don’t think it spoils the whole statue, or its meaning. So in this case I don’t think I can say Bad Idea OR Bad Design. Like many others, I say bad angle. For those curious as to how it could be interpreted any other way,
from all other angles it is a statue of Jesus washing Peter’s feet. The official title of the sculpture is “The Divine Servant” and can be seen here (http://tinyurl.com/25h8efo) and from many different angles on Google images. Kitschy still? Yeah. But not so bad as the majority of “Christian” art I’ve seen.

Sculptures and statues are works of art in three dimensions….so an artist should look at every angle from which the piece could be viewed. Yes it is a bad angle to view this piece, but the artist should have seen this angle as he/she was working on it.
Perhaps there is a lessen to be had for us all. Whether it is a piece of art or a conversation or an attitude, there are always different angles from which to perceive it. So instead of jumping to a conclusion and judging, perhaps stepping back and seeing it from a different angle. Or instead of becoming defensive, perhaps stepping back and seeing it or hearing it from another person’s perspective might help. Just a thought.

This is at Dallas THeological Seminary. I went there for grad school. And I walked by this statue every day thinking how bad the design was. Plus, of course Jesus has perfect, split-end-less, fresh-from-the-salon hair.
