I honestly have no want to see it. I don’t like him enough to not support his stuff.

Whaaat? Could MPT be a Kevin Smith fan, too? I’m heavily engaged in a Twitter campaign to get him to tweet me. So far, no luck, but as you know, I can be charming, or at the least, persistent.

I don’t do horror, but I’d do about anything for @ThatKevinSmith. Red State may be in my future…

Disagree – Christians are BY FAR the easiest to jump on and create as villains. This is just par for Kevin Smith’s disdain for the church. Just allows him to voice it on film. If he really had the risky bones he used to, he’d have made them Mormons…or dare he try – Islam?!? I guess he pulls from what he know – and being raised around it – I guess. But it seems tired…and Hollywood.

The reason Christians are by far the easiest to jump on and create as villains is because it’s not a stretch of the imagination to see scandal after scandal, abuse after abuse.

Besides, I think Bill Maher and the guys from South Park have the Mormons covered.

Good point on the reasons…but it’s a tired horse. Been vilified countless times.

Are the Islamic-fundamentalists not fair game, as well? Would it be a stretch to image them getting violent or extreme?

Bryan, do you really think Islamic fundamentalists haven’t been portrayed in movies and books as villains? Do you watch TV, movies, or read books?

Yes, actually I do watch TV. 24 was a pretty good show. And I love reading love Vince Flynn/Brad Thor novels. And there are a few movies that portray the threat that have come out in the past few years. Now think of the movies and TV shows portraying Christians as the evil, wicked villians. VERY rare is it to find a show with a character who claims to be a Christian on the episode, but doesn’t come off looking like a two-bit piece of trash. Law and Order episodes are riddled with these characters. That is a very weak argument to say the scales are balanced on how Christians and Muslims are portrayed.

I knew about this movie years ago, as it’s talked about quite abit on other sites. KS wanted to make this move for a LONG time. Does he want to show true Christians and the extremist ones? Really? Does he? I thought the purpose of this site was to expose the false/fanatical Christians and Christians from the real thing. JNNPR as an expose is great…and as a true encouragement for honest Christianity, it is a wonderful and a real blessing. That is the difference with this movie. You think there will be some “honorable” Christians shown? Or that the true heart of Christ will win in the end? Or will they all be painted with KS brush so we can all make the blanket remark of “look what believing in Christ get you” – bunch of wacked-out psychos? Yeah. I sure want that statement being driven into everyones head. KS doesn’t have the desire to weed out the bad – because to him, ALL Christians as bad.

And that is why I find it a genuinely sad statement that “Christians” commenting here are looking forward to this movie.

Wow–can’t imagine why…(insert sarcastic look here)

Mormons have been done, and we see portraits of Islamic villains every day. If you’re not a member of an extremist, Westboro-esque “church” why would it bother you? Christians say all the time that Phelps and his ilk make mainstream Christianity look bad, so why not paint a discouraging portrait of this cultish group?

I think there is sometimes a fine line between the emotions that lead to religious fanaticism and the kind of impulses that can lead to criminal violence. This contradiction could be explored in a thoughtful kind of horror film. Unfortunately, I don’t believe that Kevin Smith is subtle or thoughtful enough to do that kind of film.

I’m a sorta fan of Kevin Smith, he’s my guilty pleasure.
Heh. Ever since word of this came out I’ve been waiting for it.
Phelp’s clan sort of deserve this, I think.

This will be interesting to see, if Kevin Smith does it right. I’m not a horror fan, but I do enjoy Smith. Though, he might be taking a weird turn with this choice, as he doesn’t do serious movies very well, so this is a bit of a branching out.

I’ll probably rent it at some point and watch it, though it is sort of preaching to the choir – those who already view the church this way will look at it and go “yeah, damn straight.” And those who could actually be convicted by the work and go “Sheesh, is that how we look to outsiders?” won’t see the movie to begin with.

Though, dude, the church is picked on a lot in Hollywood. The “conversion” scene in There Will Be Blood is one of the most disturbing scenes in modern cinema. There’s long been a fascination with cults and the church, so it’s not really anything new. In fact, this isn’t the first time Smith has done stuff on the church – remember Dogma?

He’s claimed to be a Christian for years. I can claim to be Gandalf the Gray all I want – but that doesn’t make it so (because Ian McKellan is).

I just wanted to clarify with my comments with “claimed”. Saying “Kevin Smith is a Christian” is, as you said, deciding that he is.
