Dancing... or drinking through life
I am not even sure that I know how to do a link anymore. I'm giving it a shot though so, three readers, please forgive me if I mess this up.
So Rod Dreher's sister is battling cancer. It is nasty. Their faith is extraordinary. Here's his latest post (I think)
There are 8 comments on it.

Back...
I'm back here at JWalking after a bit of time because I just want someplace to record thoughts from time to time. I doubt that many of the thoughts will be political - there are plenty upon plenty of people offering their opinions on everything political and I doubt that I have much to add that will

Learning to tell a story
For the last ten months or so I've been engaged in a completely different world - the world of screenwriting. It began as a writing project - probably the 21st Century version of a yen to write the great American novel - a shot at a screenplay. I knew that I knew nothing about the art but was inspir

And just one more
I have, I think, just one more round of chemo left.
When I go through my pill popping regimen tomorrow morning it will be the last time for this particular round of drugs. Twenty-three rounds, it seems, is enough.
What comes next? We'll go back to what we did after the surgery. We'll watch and measu

I became a Dylan convert this summer (and I grew up on hair metal in the late 80′s and used to share your opinion re his unintelligibility). Pick up a copy of Blood on the Tracks. The whole album’s excellent, but “Tangled Up in Blue,” “You’re Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go,” “Shelter From the Storm,” and “Buckets of Rain” are the best tracks. I also really liked “The Rising” by Springsteen. The music’s great and the lyrics are a moving tribute to 9/11 heroes and victims. One more — Johnny Cash’s American V is awesome.

My favorite band (and they’re Christian, though they don’t make that the focus of their public image) is Eddie from Ohio (efohio.com). It’s lyrically intelligent, harmonically pleasing music–and definitely appeals to a wide generation. For something a little more out-there, checkout Matisyahu, the Hassidic Reggae Superstar. He sings straight at my soul…once I get past the Hassidic Reggae thing. I enjoy your blog and wish you a great year of discovery.

Dave Carter and Tracy Grammer – he died as a relatively young man and left a legacy of beautiful music. she continues to tour and their albums are still available. Gosh, albums- I just dated myself.

Sufjan Stevens. Unique songs about religion and Americana. He just released a 4 or 5-cd set of Christmas songs. The Flaming Lips. A fun and whimsical band. Try “Do You Realize” or “Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots” to get acquainted with them.

Give us a clue of what you like, beyond U2–hold the Dylan. If you like indie rock, that WOXY list is a good start, plus check out Death Cab For Cutie (their music is much mellower than their name). If you like older Radiohead, I would say check out Muse If you want good background music while you wait for airplanes or write blog entries, try Sigur Ros If you want to stay strictly in the Christian realm, good luck. Several bright spots though were mentioned already. Spend some time at allmusic.com, put in your favorite artists, and check out who is similar, who influenced them, listen to samples, etc. Also try pandora.com, there you can put in an artist or song, and they will find and play similar artists, full songs streamed through the internet, and it’s free.

Maybe you need some soul and funk to liven up your musical experience. It’s a good time to remember the music of the late Godfather of soul, James Brown. You should also check out Tommy Simms and his album “Peace and Love”.

Pandora is a great, great suggestion by Kurt. It leads you to new music and, by putting it in an unexpected context, to appreciate familiar music.

I recommend Israel Houghton and New Breed-Alive from South Africa. I also recommend Israel’s Christmas album.
