Evangelicals finding their voice

posted by J-Walking | 2:28am Tuesday March 13, 2007

Conventional wisdom would probably be that the National Association of Evangelicals should be tucked in a corner sucking its thumb with a “please don’t hit me” sign over it. In just the last few months it has endured seeing its head, Rev. Ted Haggard disgraced by a gay affair and has endured a hit by a group of 25 prominent social conservatives telling it to temper its global warming language. Nah. Instead of going fetal, the NAE has come out swinging, condemning military torture head on:

“As American Christians, we are above all motivated by a desire that our nation’s actions would be consistent with foundational Christian moral norms,” the document says. “We believe that a scrupulous commitment to human rights, among which is the right not to be tortured, is one of these Christian moral convictions.”

This may not seem like that big a deal. But it is big news. Though the NAE says it is not explicitly criticizing the White House it is clear that they are and as such they are further
distinguishing themselves from other social conservatives by more boldly stating their take on Jesus’ concerns. It will be interesting to see the next salvo from the Dobson gang. Stay tuned.

Back...
I'm back here at JWalking after a bit of time because I just want someplace to record thoughts from time to time. I doubt that many of the thoughts will be political - there are plenty upon plenty of people offering their opinions on everything political and I doubt that I have much to add that will

Learning to tell a story
For the last ten months or so I've been engaged in a completely different world - the world of screenwriting. It began as a writing project - probably the 21st Century version of a yen to write the great American novel - a shot at a screenplay. I knew that I knew nothing about the art but was inspir

I have, I think, just one more round of chemo left. When I go through my pill popping regimen tomorrow morning it will be the last time for this particular round of drugs. Twenty-three rounds, it seems, is enough. What comes next? We'll go back to what we did after the surgery. We'll watch and measu

Big???It just means that someone, somewhere in NEA has the same kind of heart you did when you were in your compassion quagmire at the White House. It sounds good but what are they really going to do about it? The best we can expect from James Dobson is silence.BTW, re: next post, Richard Foster is the real deal!

Haggard was disgraced by his homosexual acts? Now, that is illegal to say in England. Gays have outlawed the teaching of the New Testament in “CHRISTIAN” schools. Now the Humanist Manifesto rules Christian schools too. Some of your Progressive buddies David. Read the Crunchy Con’s blog here at Beliefnet. Buying electric cars and recycling cans and bottles should not mean supporting and promoting pederasty. But guess what? You know David, you’re not dancing with the devil, your eating lunch with him. Once again (as usual) the “Religious Right” is correct. There IS a Gay Agenda and it is now in full force. massresistance.org and see.

The only thing I found at massresistance.org was rabid homophobia and conspiracy theories.

Matt, How about actions against people by homosexual organizations that are really happening? How is that rabid? massresistance is presenting real things that are really happening. To children. Homophobia should be declassified as a very rational concern.

While were at it, why not declassify racism?Equal rights, legal equal rights, for homosexualks is either going to come to the US or it is going to break our Constitutional system. The legal rationale has been there for over a century but as a societ and the precential momentum is clear. All people are legally equal or nobody is.

The tide is changing. As people like Donny die off their hatred and un-Christian attitude is being replaced by people who understand the truth of the phrase “liberty for all.” It’s unfortunate, but it make take a generation before enough of the spirit of the antichrist is expunged from the church before gays and lesbians are accepted as children of God.
