Partial truth

Wednesday April 18, 2007

It was supposed to be this way.In the early 1990s, the pro-life community, on the run after electoral and judicial defeats, chose to target partial-birth abortions because they were so heinous (though exceedingly rare), opposed by so many Americans (approximately...

In this Sunday and Monday's Kansas City Star, there was an amazing article about a family named Weatherford who carried their child full term- despite the fact that they knew he would die at birth. there was nothing medical science could do to save their son and so they decided to love him every minute he was alive - with every kick and roll in utero, and for 35 minutes after his birth, he was perfectly and absolutely loved. I read it as an amazing affirmation to the capacity of human beings to find meaning and God in the hardest of situations. A friend remarked wryly that it was an interesting twist on pro-life. I think that was a statement that reduced its wonder and love.I must recommend it. Google Zeke's Story and I think you will get it.

So then David, as you walk with Jesus, towards promoting Leftist politics, it is OK to murder a human child, as long as it is out of view? Keep it inside the woman and slaughter at will? Aren't we to desire mercy and not sacrifice? David? I don't believe any Christian in the first century of the Church and many centuries there after, would support the Leftists of today. I believe they would shake the dust from their feet and "move on." Or, they would argue their case against them. Which of course, thay already have done in the writings of the New Testament. What say you David?

Dear Mr. Kuo, The problem with the pro-life movement is that it wants to control other people but refuses to take responsibility for the decisions it wants to make for others. If you are so concerned about unborn babies, then what about the born ones who live in poverty? If people are so pro-life, why don't they get their hands dirty and raise, feed, pay for doctor visits and schooling for those children whose parents cannot support? What I see in the pro-life movement is a huge lack of care for the babies who have been born. They just want the babies to be born. If the infant dies in poverty, who cares as long as it was born. The pro-life movement is not pro child. It is anti-child and anti-woman. Please feel free not to help us live more "righteous" lives. You are doing more damage than help.

I find no support for good and healthy sex education, you can't discuss condoms or preventative measures. Unwed mothers are dismissed and not cared for. Pregancy is encouraged but not care for the poor and impoverished. "Have your babies but don't expect us to take of them." Girls take a chastity pledge but boys don't. I could support elements of the Pro-life movement if it indeed was fully pro life. I don't care to stuff my form of morality down anyone's throat.

The history and politics are interesting but your last paragraph is the key one. How we treat each other wherever we meet each other has to matter more than the courts and the legislature. Jesus' sermon has to be central to Christian thinking and behavior.

A message to David Kuo: If God believed you had the wisdom to know what to do with a womb, He would have given you one.

I don't think it is fair to paint the pro-life movement with a broad brush. The Roman Catholic Church have long argued for support of social assistance and welfare to help unwed mothers raising their children.
In democratic debate, we should avoid judging other people. The Pro-choice movement should stop demonizing the pro-life movement as anti-woman, anti-sex bigots. The pro-life movement should stop demonizing pro-choice people as baby killers. My god, can this debate ever reach some sense of decorum?

I agree, Justin, that we should be more civil about this. The problem is that this debate is emotionally charged. If abortion becomes illegal, a portion of almost every woman becomes public domain. It belongs to the state. While it is an organ I no longer have due to medical problems, I want a woman's life to belong to herself, not the state. If you really want to see emotionally charged, have the choice of who must have a vasectomy and who cannot belong to an organization dominated by a group of women, many of whom think men are a bunch of drooling idiots incapable of making the decision for themselves. While it is not a complete match for the situation it might give you a sense of why it is emotionally charged. Agape! Shekah

Women only have late-term abortions, I will venture close to 100% of the time, when: 1)the baby has very severe birth defects that will cause that baby to suffer and require staggering medical care, just to continue to suffer and often die; or 2)the mother develops complications with the pregnancy that will kill her or threaten her health in a very serious manner. It is very hard to even find doctors to get these procedures done. I am in school studying prenatal ultrasound, and there are many heartbreaking medical events that can go wrong and do go wrong with pregnancies. I leave it to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists to decide what method is best, or the least harmful and awful (there is no happy option), in order to do the late-term abortion. Pro-life people, especially those lacking a uterus, need to get serious and become educated about these medical realities. This is not morality or ideology; it's blood and guts, life, health, and death. You won't know until it happens to your wife, or your daughter.

justin, "The Pro-choice movement should stop demonizing the pro-life movement as anti-woman, anti-sex bigots." No, the anti-choice crowd must stop BEING anti-women and anti-sex bigots. If they do that, the charges that they ARE will stop. It's really prety simple. You even said as much youself... "The pro-life movement should stop demonizing pro-choice people as baby killers." Yes, they should. "My god, can this debate ever reach some sense of decorum?" That will only happen when the RRR keeps its nose out of other people's business. (i.e. the charges of "hate-monger" will ony end when people stop saying hateful things, I'm afraid.)

Your final question is worded as though the Christian community hasn't been reaching out to women who've aborted their children or delivered babies who need families. Where are the agnostic and atheist and socialist organizations doing this? Christians have been helping women pick up the shattered pieces of their lives since this became legal; the other side? It's just been performing, then ushering the women out the door to make room for the next patient.

"Where are the agnostic and atheist and socialist organizations doing this?" You ask the wrong question, Norma. Perhaps not agnostic, but certainly a-religious (is that the samething as being a-theistic?) are the many Childrens' Aid Societies taht do that kind of work. They simply are not operating out of a "religious calling", and certainly do not do it as an identifiably "Christian" organization.
