Anteaters and Us

posted by David Kuo | 3:57pm Saturday August 4, 2007

The National Zoo here in Washington will be unveiling “Little Schnozzy” – a new baby anteater. The WashPost has a fantastic article about the little guy, his parents, and anteaters in general that will absolutely suck you in.
Here’s my favorite anteater fact – the mother’s don’t really have a clue that they’ve just had a baby. Only an apparently deafening shriek by the baby alerts the basically blind animal that something has happened and then only because it wants to try and make the shrieking stop. At that:

Once they let out that life-or-death screech, baby anteaters climb on their mothers’ backs. And, though they do get down from time to time, many will stay there for nearly a year. A mature male such as Dante can weigh as much as 90 pounds and stretch as much as seven feet from snout to tail.

I find myself drawn closer to God because of these anteaters. As they article says, they are not very bright and yet they have actually found a way to make it in the wild. If they can make it, there is hope for humanity.

Back...
I'm back here at JWalking after a bit of time because I just want someplace to record thoughts from time to time. I doubt that many of the thoughts will be political - there are plenty upon plenty of people offering their opinions on everything political and I doubt that I have much to add that will

Learning to tell a story
For the last ten months or so I've been engaged in a completely different world - the world of screenwriting. It began as a writing project - probably the 21st Century version of a yen to write the great American novel - a shot at a screenplay. I knew that I knew nothing about the art but was inspir

I have, I think, just one more round of chemo left. When I go through my pill popping regimen tomorrow morning it will be the last time for this particular round of drugs. Twenty-three rounds, it seems, is enough. What comes next? We'll go back to what we did after the surgery. We'll watch and measu

I don’t know, Mr. Kuo, anteaters may be just as helpless as humans in the wild, but they don’t go around killing their own kind because they have different textured fur or believe in a different anteater deity, nor do they go around mindlessly destroying the environment. At least, not without providing it with fertilizer…

Ah David, is there anything that doesn’t draw you closer to God? Collapsing buildings, anteaters, the Red Sox?

One of my favorite holy guys is a Francisan priest who said – Either everything created is holy or non of it is. When we open our eyes to God’s world – Everything draws us closer to God -Everything. Dividing the world into the sacred and profane – well – it keeps us on guard and perhaps safe – but it does not teach us of God. Even when I was a little kid listening to our minister preach fire and brimstone salvation, something deep in me said – it’s not about what the minister was preaching. I think I gave up salvation as fire insurance at a very early age. My mother recently gave me an art project I had completed at the age of 6 – God is love – is painted on the ceramic plate. There are times in life and in history when we forget that very thing, but ultimately it’s either all holy or non of it is. However, I do have a hard time with the Red Sox – the Cubbies – now there’s a holy team.

John – I don’t know – i guess it is a matter of orientation…striving to be oriented towards God and to seeing him in all things. And yes – the Yankees, the Baltimore Ravens, so much in politics, war to name a few…

So many unexpected things make me pause and think about the glory of God. Sometimes when I just look at the simplest things, like a hummingbird, a flower, even insects will give me pause. I just can see the complexity of nature as a sign of a sovereign God. The beauty of the sky, mountains and oceans show me the beauty of God. To me, it takes so much more blind faith to be an athiest than to belive in God. To think the delicate balance of nature could just “happen” without a divine architect seems impossible. Nature and beauty please and honor a great God.
