“Godly” money?

More on “In God We Trust” on our currency.
John E. points out:

American presidents such as Theodore Roosevelt strongly disapproved of the idea of evoking God within the context of a “cheap” political motto. In a letter to William Boldly on November 11, 1907, President Roosevelt wrote: “My own feeling in the matter is due to my very firm conviction that to put such a motto on coins, or to use it in any kindred manner, not only does no good but does positive harm, and is in effect irreverence, which comes dangerously close to sacrilege … it seems to me eminently unwise to cheapen such a motto by use on coins, just as it would be to cheapen it by use on postage stamps, or in advertisements.”

I think President Teddy had it exactly right. How it does cheapen such a motto by putting it on our money. It frankly reduces it to the level of cliche. And how sad that is when that topic is something so serious as trusting God.

Learning to tell a story
For the last ten months or so I've been engaged in a completely different world - the world of screenwriting. I think it depends on whether one thinks the motto itself is appropriate or not. If “In God We Trust” is an appropriate motto for the country then I wouldn’t think putting it on our currency is cheapening it. Our currency is a symbol of the country and putting our motto on there isn’t any “cheaper” than putting “E Pluribus Unum” on our currency or depictions from the 50 states.
Now if one thinks the motto itself is a poor choice, then it’s a different story…

Why are Christians so frickin’ involved with things of this world?
Has anyone ever read the Gospels?
There won’t even be coins in a few more years. (Mark of the Beast sound familiar? ATM’s sound familiar?)
Let those destined to perish and that willingly choose ungodly ways perish. Be concerned with things that are valuable for eternity. If the Progressive’s rehash of Sodom and Gomorrah wants to secularize (actually blasphemasize) society let ‘em.
Jesus looked at a coin of His day and split from it what was God’s and what wasn’t. The coin had an inscription of a man that claimed to be the son of a deity. Jesus gave “him” the money and gave to God what was His. Namely Jesus.
“Joshua” is the Name we should be calling “Jesus” by. And before Joshua the Messiah there was Joshua who took over for Moses (you know, the name of the book guy). Now that Joshua, had good advice: “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”
Hello 21st century Christians?
It’s time to wake up and smell the Biblical truth.

Thanks for the shout-out, Dave!
Eric, I’d say that the use of ‘In God We Trust’ on money – and as a motto – cheapens the idea of God because it implies that we can appropriate a reciprocal relationship between God and the U.S.
It also cheapens the idea of trusting in God – America has trust in God, and also has the biggest darn military on Earth. Which do you think America would pick if it had to choose between them?
