I, too, hope there will be healing - from the tremendous harm that both Gonzales and Rove (not to mention W, Rummy, Cheney, et al) have inflicted on America.
As to whether or not W will appoint someone worthy of the job, do not hold your breath.
I'm afraid I have to second what the poster above has said.
I don't really buy that reason. The Democrats' firepower is not really that big a deal. The White House is adept at deflecting inquiries and dragging things along, and the Democrats are nowhere near as quick to subpoena as the GOP Congress was in the 1990s. What's more, the Bush administration subscribes to a much more extended theory of executive privilege than did previous ones. Also, the GOP minority in the Senate is filibustering at a record rate, making any particularly assertive investigation tough to follow through.
Unless there's some particular bad things they think are bound to come to light, I don't see why the White House would fear Congress much.
That said, your theory beats my theory, which is, "Who the heck knows?"

And it's so strange that even though once in power the Democratic controlled Congress passed ethics reforms and minimum wage increases, etc., they are the one's being blamed for being the so-called "Worst Approval Rating Congress in History" even though it is the Republican minority that is hindering the progress on things like this through filibustering things like this and grandstanding with the other issues to point out what they have managed to stop Congress from doing rather than what has been accomplished.
In the case of Rove and Gonzales, it's a good thing God holds people accountable as it's quite apparent the Religious Right will/does not.
Seems to me that "Gonzales" could have played the race card, since it sure seems like the Democrats ran him out of town because of his ethnicity, since he did nothing wrong at all.
But, you know, accusing leftist-bigots of being racists never does any good. They scream louder than men with class.
Mr. Gonzales, go with God.
I suppose Larry Craig has now been accused by leftist-bigots as well.
Is it never possible that the Republican party can do wrong, Donny? Is it really that lopsided in your world view? Is that really being a man of class? Is everything in your mind seen with that degree of hatred? That seems to be a strange mindset for a Christian.
My heart has gone out to the three young Gonzales children throughout the last few years. I hope that as a family, the Gonzales have been able to have healing conversations in recent weeks and that those children are able to walk through the world with their own heads high. God bless the whole family.
Nan, you are right to think of Mr. Gonzales's family, especially his children. Our compassion, however, shouldn't blind us to the facts. Gonzales might have been a bad AG, but that's not why his family is suffering. They are suffering because Mr. Gonzales lied under oath, and he got caught. (Perjury cases are hard to prove, but there's no reasonable doubt that Gonzales lied; to suggest otherwise is akin to debating what the meaning of is is.) Those who blame Democrats, liberals, and other things that go bump in the night for the Gonzales family's suffering are implicitly condoning Gonzales's dishonesty.
