Appreciating pregnancy

I think I am a pregnant woman. No, I think I appreciate what it is like to be a pregnant woman. Sort of.

So I finished another round of chemo last week. For two and a couple days afterwards I was still feeling kind of queasy and not very hungry. But then Kim's breath.

We were sitting upstairs in the baby's room and she came over and gave me a quick kiss. I smelled Welch's grape soda. She was drinking gatorade but I smell Welch's grape soda and at that moment I had to have Welch's grape soda. I mean I had to have Welch's grape soda.

If, at that moment, I could have had the most marvelous sex of my entire life or Welch's grape soda I would have chosen the soda. If I had been offered buckets of money or Welch's grape soda I would have chosen the soda.

Keep in mind here that I do not drink soda. Ever. I think the last soda I had was three or four years ago. Eww, I hate the stuff.

But at that moment... yes, Welch's... grape... soda.

My beloved got me some of soda and I drank it and I drank it and I drank it and it was sooooooo good. I mean smoke-a-cigarette-after-it kind of good.

And then hunger. Massive hunger. Very Hungry Caterpillar kind of hunger. After eating? More Welch's grape soda.

I write all of this because I realize what a true craving is like.

Guys talk all the time about how they "have to have" a (burger, steak, beer, etc.). But guys, you have no clue what a real craving is like. Pregnant women know real cravings. And now I do too. Do I look fat?

It's after labor day, David. The white bonnet is all wrong.

In an odd sort of way, you are blessed. The Ibo of Eastern Nigeria used to refer to women who had been through menopause as "A man among women." Few men will ever experience what you and every woman who's been pregnant have. Grape soda sounds good, though.
