Evangelicals fearing evangelicals

posted by David Kuo | 12:53am Friday October 19, 2007

A recent meeting of leading evangelical leaders issued a statement about evangelicalism that read, in part:
“We have become deeply concerned about some movements within traditional evangelicalism that seem to be diminishing the church’s life and leading us away from our historic beliefs and practices. On the one hand, we are troubled by the idolatry of personal consumerism and the politicization of faith; on the other hand, we are distressed by the unchallenged acceptance of theological and moral relativism.”

Back...
I'm back here at JWalking after a bit of time because I just want someplace to record thoughts from time to time. I doubt that many of the thoughts will be political - there are plenty upon plenty of people offering their opinions on everything political and I doubt that I have much to add that will

Learning to tell a story
For the last ten months or so I've been engaged in a completely different world - the world of screenwriting. It began as a writing project - probably the 21st Century version of a yen to write the great American novel - a shot at a screenplay. I knew that I knew nothing about the art but was inspir

I have, I think, just one more round of chemo left. When I go through my pill popping regimen tomorrow morning it will be the last time for this particular round of drugs. Just in case anybody wants more info on the group that made this statement, it’s by The Gospel Coalition. (There’s some pretty interesting stuff on their site.)

The Apostles dealt with the “Evangelical issue.”
When “testing all things” in light of scripture, you come to the realization that some Evangelicals hold to the untainted Gospel and some are teaching falsehoods and cunningly masquerading them as some kind of new revelations or teachings for today’s “modern” world. This is why i have such a disdain for Liberal and Progressive ideology and theology and for those that promote and preach it. Progressives are no better then Jehovah’s Witnesses and Mormons for what they have done to the authentic truth of scripture.
“Evangel” means the Gospel. So, the importance of opposing what Liberals and Progressives have done in mangling and corrupting the Bible to promote their worldliness is very impotant. Just as it is important to oppose the “conservatives” that want to advance a “big business” environment into the Church community. Though the wordwide Church is purely peaceful, we must also face down those that would claim war is a Christian value. It is just as opposed by Christ Jesus as is a new definition of “marriage.”
Christians can no more support corporate greed than they can support abortion as birth control, sexual licentiousness, same-gender sexual behavior and the appeasement of Muslims and Islamic global goals. Neo-cons build tanks and attack aircraft and Liberals and Progressives agressively turn our public schools into brothels and bathhouses. 11-year olds encouraged to take birth control pills supports their sexual behavior.
This is not a difficult issue for “Christians” to resolve, but it becomes a difficult one when false teachers and malevolent and perverted individuals hi-jack the word “Christian” to advance an “agenda” that is purely antithetical to the Gospel and Apostolic witness.
“Neo-conservative” supporters of war and corporate greed need to be asked to leave or asked to repent, or asked to convert. As do those “Liberals and Progressives” that encourage and support unfettered hedonism. Then once repentance and reconciliation is acheieved, the Church Community can continue to be a blessing to those that want to leave their lives of greed and licentious abandon to become a follower of Christ.
Certainly people can do “whatever they want to,” but in the Christian Evangel, “anything” does not go.
Donny

In other words, we love our brothers and sisters in The Lord, but we’re not too sure about the Republican and Democratic ones?
Works for me.

Donny, I have to say your writing is getting pretty good and I actually agree with several of your points. I bet we still disagree on conclusions, though, and I feel compelled to point out that “corporate” can apply to government as much as to private business.

Perhaps they should talk to Joel Ostein and the rest of the prosperity/life coach crowd so they can feel good about themselves…

Donny (in all your incarnations):
Yes, I read the item about Maine 11-year-olds getting “the pill” on Crunchy Con as well.
What you’re conveniently forgetting is that in Rod’s comboxes, people from every part of the political and religious spectrum, from the far left to the far right, condemned the Maine school board. And religious conservatives professed surprise and genuine gratitude for support and agreement they didn’t expect.
In one area, at least, you’re trying to create polarization where it doesn’t exist on the Bnet community.

…but Donny just to give you some well-deserved props, I’m all in favor of people not living lives of unfettered hedonism, greed and licentious abandon, and if more Christians like you spoke out against war, the world might have a better chance.

I see a two-fold problem:
1) The Evangelical flock-fleecers who preach Prosperity will not change their ways, as they find themselves accountable to no one. How many Televangelist “Empires” have crumbled already? Nothing has changed, and if anything the doctrine and its champions have only worsened.
2) Evangelicals/Charismatics who do not preach Prosperity and do not live opulent lifestyles continue to nonetheless tolerate those who do. There is no collective condemnation coming from the many E/C pulpits.
Someone with any courage needs to step out against these Heretics.

Is this a “pox on both your houses” attack at the Religious Right and Left, or rather a genuine calling to retreat from the worldly and focus on the heavenly? (Some of us who grew up outside the evangelical tradition can’t always tell from the language …)
