Belichick NFL coach of year…next Barry Bonds MLB mascot

posted by David Kuo | 4:53pm Thursday January 3, 2008

If one needed any further proof of the message American sports sends to kids consider this – the man who was fined more than any other coach in NFL history for cheating has been chosen coach of the year by NFL sportswriters.
Sad.
There is no denying the Patriots greatness. 16-0 is incredible. It is too bad it is truly 16-0*.
Why the *? Is it because of Tom Brady? No. Randy Moss the cause for the *? Is it Junior Seau or Teddy Bruschi? No. It is Bill Belichick, the coach, who was so heavily reprimanded for cheating by the league offices.
Let Tom Brady win the MVP… or let it be Randy Moss. But do not reward the man who masterminded the Patriots cheating by calling him coach of the year. If anything he is the opposite. He is the man who lead the cheating. He is the guy who actually undercut his players by cheating. They didn’t need his help. He does not deserve to be called coach of the year.
And those sportswriters who voted for him? Shame on you. How do parents explain this one to their children? “You shouldn’t cheat little Susie, because if you do you might win coach of the year?”

Learning to tell a story
For the last ten months or so I've been engaged in a completely different world - the world of screenwriting. David:
Emotionally, I’m with you.
The problem is, what do you do when you encounter a guy like (say) Barry Bonds, who would have qualified for the Hall of Fame BEFORE HE EVER PUT A NEEDLE IN HIS ARM.
Say the Patriots were forced to forfeit that game against the Jets. The fact would remain that they still won 15 games in a row, and it is hard not to credit the coach of such a team for that fact.
Loathsome human being though Belichick is.

full disclosure, i am a pats fan, but i agree that it sends a bad message when someone who was caught cheating is awarded the coach of the year. just like caught steroid users are disqualified from election to the pro bowl, belichick should have been taken off of the COY ballots.
i also think the cheating incident helped the pats very very minutely this season. the two are separate issues.

Exactly.
Unfortunately it shows -Once again- you don’t have to be a Good person to win something.
Didn’t we learn that in the way GWB nastily beat McCain in South Carolina way back when? Cheaters can get the valedictorian spot too. But it’s more just when the most honest hardest working student earns it.
Success + Character = Justice
Success – Character = No justice. Tainted victory.

I must respectfully disagree with your opinion. Belichick was named coach of the year not saint of the year. That is among all the NFL coaches who did the best job at coaching. Your contention that his [purported] cheating should disqualify him ignores the fact that all the coaches sanction such actions and only Belichick was caught. He took responsibility for his actions and was reprimanded heartily. As for the asterisk nonsense, please remember that the videotaping was caught ten minutes into the first game and was never seen by the Pats, therefore they never profited from the video. They won each and every game honestly.
By your reckoning we shouldn’t honor many of the saints. St. Peter lied (three times). St. Paul sanctioned the murder of St. Stephen. We are Christians and we are supposed to forgive and see people in the light of Christ’s love. Belichick was wrong; never profited from the situation; took responsibility for it; and won away. That’s a good coach and a good role model.
