Pity… for being an American

posted by David Kuo | 1:51pm Saturday February 9, 2008

I’m the middle of a 36-hour stopover in London on my way to Uganda. The flight in last night was stunning – crystal clear skies and a route that took us directly over a glittering London. Breathtaking.
Today I had the strangest thing happen to me – two times. I had people offer me pity because I was an American.
These could well be very isolated and utterly non representative comments… freakish even. Freakish like seeing that license plate today that said, “KUO7″.
Freakish or not, however, they were jarring. I’ve traveled overseas a lot in my life. My first memory is actually of walking across the tarmac at Heathrow after an overnight flight and hearing my mother say, “Never again, never again are we taking a charter flight…[with a three-year-old boy in the middle of the night].” So I am accustomed to hearing certain things about America – generally very positive things.
This is the first time, however, I’ve been overseas since September 2002. I’ve heard from friends and read in countless places that the perception of America has taken a dramatic plunge. So I expected to get an angry earful about our country if I got anything at all. I never expected pity.
Again, I may have had a most unusual experience but it was shocking to hear people say, “Oh, you’re an American, I’m sorry.” Anger, at least, stems from passion – stems from genuine care and concern. There wasn’t any passion behind these comments other than genuine pity.
Part of the pity was about the woeful state of our currency. Right now it is basically $2 to every British pound – a consistent rate of exchange not seen 1975. Our dollar is at historic lows against the Euro. It is expensive to be an American and people recognize that.
But the other part of the pity was deeper. It was a general sense that it was just hard being an American right now and there was, of course, deep pity about the man who currently occupies the White House.
But maybe there was another reason. Check out this ad from a Tube station in London:
IMG_0115.JPG
America as the set for movies? Is that what we’ve become? Really? The America that helped rid the world of fascism and helped beat down Soviet communism, the America that helped rebuild Europe and Japan, the America of great art and aspiration is now marketed as the movie set for Forrest Gump? Ack.
Again, this is a very small snapshot of a particular moment. But even snapshots sometimes matter.

I would have simply said? “Sorry for what?” “I am proud of my president, my country, my history, and owe no man anything for any of it.”
For all those years when our currency was so strong and made it easy to export… now it’s the opposite and we’re getting harder and harder to compete against.
All those people collecting dollars will eventually find that the only way to get value for them is to spend them here.

It means so little to be American in the good times. Now that we’ve taken big steps back and the collective senses of entitlement and victimhood have cost us so much, it’s good to be an American. My country needs me again.

Michele: “So, did you tell them that at least you could defend yourself if an intruder broke in and not be charged with assault?”
I suspect he would have reminded David that the chances of being assaulted in London are about 1/10 those of being assaulted in Washington, DC.
Michele: “Or that we have one of the highest standard of living in the world?”
But England’s is higher. http://business.timesonline.co.uk/tol/business/economics/article3137506.ece
Michele: “Or that now with the drop in housing prices you can buy a McMansion cheap? :-)
Yes, that is something to brag about, isn’t it. Of course, it is quite likely that the mortgage company or bank that is financing that McMansion is at least partially owned by an Arab nation, but that’s a small price to pay for 35,000 sq. ft. of American dream.

David,
I lived in South Korea in ’04 when the abuse perpetrated by our military and executive branch at the prison occurred (Abu Girab?, spelling?).
S. Korea also had the third highest amount of troops at that point, just below the Brits, in Iraq.
I know for a fact that our embassy was barricaded with several rows of riot police and armored vehicles 24/7. I know because I visited our embassy several times to vote in the ’04 elections.
Mind you, this is a country in which we actually have military bases and an excellent trading relationship.
I think that most young Koreans don’t mind westerners. I certainly was treated well.
I think they’re tired of being a pawn of the US government. And yeah, to any conservatives that might mock that – they feel they’d fair just as well against the North NOW without our military acting as a tripwire.
Conservatives fail to understand that when we torture people and then debate the merits of torture under a scenario that resembles something on the television show ’24′ (What are the odds of such a scenario?), we look like Nazis.
It’s interesting to inject Bush and Iraq into a debate about the coming election when talking with conservatives. They seem to change the subject (I’m the black-sheep Democrat of my family and childhood community). I think somewhere in the back of their head they know we’ve screwed up. We illegally invaded a sovereign country under totally bogus pretenses.
Another reason pity is elicited is that our health care system is like that of a Latin American country compared with other developed countries.
In S. Korea I thought I might have come down with cancer. In one day with no appointments or referrals under their single-payer system, I saw an M.D., a specialist at another location, and a hospital specialist all for less than $20, and that included the prescriptions.
Michael Moore wasn’t to far off base with his movie ‘Sicko’ from what I experienced in S. Korea.
To any Koreans reading this, I enjoyed your country. You should be very proud. To US citizens, let’s make our country great again.

But seriously, they were pitying you because as an American they were “assuming” that you were a Christian. And since England is going to Sharia Law, soon you could be in a life-threatening situation for being on the newest Islamic holy site. You were in London.

You know Brian ol’ buddy, during the closing months of WWII, British soldiers were asked to volunteer for a rather difficult job. As REAL Nazi’s started blending in with regular Germen soldiers, Britain founded a group of men that went through the prisoners of war German soldiers, until they matched up an SS or Gestapo agent with a phote the had of him. They then walked this never been prosecuted individual into the woods and shot him to death, leaving a PPK, P-38, or a Luger on the body.
George Bush is no Winston Churchill, but I’m thinking an A-10 Thunderbolt (aka Warthog), a B-2 Stealth Bomber, or a Navy Seal, puts him in good historic company with other leaders with a backbone.

Donny is like so many Americans who have decided to pimp Jesus out to the GOP. Note his immediate reference to violence, all because someone might dare question the actions of his home nation.
This is why we are seeing Christianity become more and more impotent as a social force in our nation. Christians like Donny have taken the Biblical Jesus, stripped away any of the social justice message that he spoke, dressed him up in a fine GOP sleeveless gown a la Ann Coulter, and have prostituted him out to the leadership of the GOP in hopes that they will find “salvation” for our nation.
Of course, when confronted with this Donny will immediately begin to lambaste how bad liberals are, never even stopping to consider his own guilt in turning Jesus into a Stepford wife of the GOP.
And this is what passes today for Biblical Christianity among the religious right. It would be laughable if it weren’t so sad.

All I ask is that you let facts and reality do the talking.
I was candid in how I feel about scumbaggy secularist Europeans talking about Americans. I pity their dying and corrupt world. I have that right still. Until of course some Democrat passes some new law to silence more of the first amendment.
ds4090,
Let’s “Test all things shall we?”
I do not alter Jesus. I take Him at His “word.” The social justice mesage of Jesus included threats to those that harm children. And, He detailed that marriage is a man and a woman, and that no man should alter that. Why would I joinh with liars to the contrary? I take your judgments of my positions with a grain of salt. Jesus as the ultimate Judge of them. Not Ted Kennedy OR John McCain. Let’s see if you can take the testing.
My Jesus said to render to Caesar what is Caesar’s and to God what is God’s. It was said of Jesus that the government would be upon His shoulders. The Democrats want that outlawed. But they want “this” to stay legal: Killing unborn children. Forcing everyone to be ruled by perverted marriage laws. That is is not for Caesar to decide. In fact “even” the Romans rejected their same-gender married Caesars. Look it up sir (or madame). Even some Republicans believe in killing unborn children for convenience. I hope they know how to swim with a millstone around their neck. Jesus presented ONLY the conservative view on marriage and threatened those that like leading children into harm. he ALSO wanted tax collectors to stop their dishonest taxation.
Three strikes against your so-called Liberal socail issues from the Gospels.
All condemnations of Liberal and Progressive ideologies from quotes of Jesus. I didn’t write the New Testament. The Apostles did. Marriage to them also, is always a man and a woman. Same-gender sex is never encouraged OR supported and is inded loudly and completely opposed for Christian to engage in. Some GOPers don’t believe in the social justice of Jesus either. They are just as bad as Liberal-Progressive Democrats on that.
” . . . the Biblical Jesus, stripped away any of the social justice message that he spoke, dressed him up in a fine GOP sleeveless gown . . .”
If anyone is dressing up Jesus in a dress, pal, you had better look to the Left. Literally and factually. Clcik on Liberal-Progressive orgs such as GLSEN and PFLAG and of GLAD. But then again, facts about who is corrupting social issues has never caused a Liberal or Progressive to look at themselves and their transvestite supporting supporters. Remeember Jesus said He did not come to chnage the law of Moses. That law “also” condemned men being effeminate in dress and behavior.
Your side is not measuring up in the “equal to” situation.
Please show where GOPites alter the New Testament? Democrats that call themselves Christians literally “do” implement that. These people have not only pimped out Jesus to their hedonistic and pornographic world, where their Jesus doesn’t ask adulterers to not sin anymore, but actually encourages and supports the sin and sinning of adultery. It was Liberalization of divorce that came up with a “no-fault” divorce.
What passes as the Biblical Christianity of the religious right, is the Biblical Christianity written by the first Christians. What passes for biblical Christianity for Liberals and Progressives and almost all Democrats, is the Humanist Manifesto.
The Apostles knew a thing or two about false teachings and those that spread them:
“Remind them of these things, and solemnly charge them in the presence of God not to wrangle about words, which is useless and leads to the ruin of the hearers.
Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth.
But avoid worldly and empty chatter, for it will lead to further ungodliness . . . ”
Where do “conservative Christians” wrangle about words? They ONLY remind believers of the truthful ones.
Empty chatter is from the direction of “anything goes” and “Do what thou wilt.”
From the first Gospel to the letter of Jude, you have the opposition of those that would alter scripture for political gain.
Democrats champion abortion and unrestrained hedonism in our society. Evident of that is our youth culture of incredible promiscuity, taught to them by of course liberal social beliefs. Jesus and the Apostles spoke agianst that. Democrats champion same-gender marriage. Jesus and the Apostles spoke against that in no uncertain ways. Democrats champion high and extremely unfair taxation of hard-working, honest and decnt people. Jesus and the Apostles spoke against dishonest taxation and urged those that desire a Godly life to repent of dishonest gain.
I don’t “lambaste” how bad Liberals (and Progressives) are. I just hold fast to that which is truth. I have not presented one false word in the above facts.
Another teaching of authentic Christian life that we should follow.

In Europe more people die from illicit drug use and suicide and abortion than people do in our gun violence. And please notice Bro, that the ONLY thing Democrats will look at comparing evil to solutions with is honest people to being handled as criminals and taking away the rights of good people.
My version of Jesus is the one presented by the Apostles. The Leftists that ds, holds so dear has altered Him into a homosexual or a vapid wimp. He was neither. His view of marriage was a man and a woman. If we are to hold to the Old Testament as well, then effiminate and homosexual men are even worse off than in any Bible believing-Church. I’m not going to taze anyone Bro, because I do not own a Tazer or a gun.
Please if you would, attempt to justify what the Liberals and Progressives have done with the Jesus of the Bible. There’s is a new version that even he wouldn’t know anything about.
My Jesus (the One in the non-altered versions) holds people accountable for their behaviors or expects them to go and sin no more. In Democrat Land that makes Him a homophobe, a hater, a racist and a conservative.
I’m waiting patiently for your Bible lesson.

Donny,
When was the last time you were in Europe? Where exactly were you?
I’m bilingual and would jump at the chance to live in Spain: Barcelona, Madrid, ay caramba!
But here in the USA the only place for God in our government is where it counts: the fruits of policy. Like Pete Townshend of The Who said, “Let’s see action.” I’m sick of politicians of all stripes pimpin’ out my Lord and Savior.
And I’d like to see loving action. I’d like to see the preference for the poor like Jesus preached in ‘The Sermon on the Mount’.
The only way I understand that Jesus held folks accountable was through love. The self-proclaimed righteous were the group that Jesus had the most contempt for.
I’d love to see scripture in which Jesus, himself, condemns homosexuality. I’m well aware of Romans 1, but I also know that Paul wasn’t the messiah. Paul never claimed to know Jesus in the flesh during his earthly ministry.
As far as abortion is concerned, it’s actually advocated for in Numbers 5:11-29.
Your crazy bro… perhaps you follow a different gospel… The focus of the New Testament is on a community of love; not condemnation. I highly doubt from my readings of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John that homosexuality was even on the radar for Christ. I’m waiting for a Synoptic Gospel quote bro.
I was amazed that you were posting positive things on Deepak Chopra’s and Neal Donald Walsche’s blogs. I bet, regardless of these petty issues, we’ll see each other on the other side of eternity and have a good laugh.
Maybe this is all a joke to you anyhow. Your posts are epic in a Frank Zappa kinda way.
God bless, … and no… don’t taze me bro… no! No! Please don’t taze me bro!

Donny: “Let’s “Test all things shall we?”"
Let’s do, Donny. Go for it.
Donny: “I do not alter Jesus. I take Him at His “word.” The social justice mesage of Jesus included threats to those that harm children.”
Indeed he did, and you would think that the damage that the GOP policies and votes have done to children over the past 12 years would be sufficient to get you to actually criticize the GOP. But no, you and your fellow pimps continue to decry how bad the Democrats are to children, but you overlook what the educational policy of the Bush administration has done, and what the President’s continued opposition to SCHIP is doing to children on a daily basis.
Donny: “And, He detailed that marriage is a man and a woman, and that no man should alter that. Why would I joinh with liars to the contrary?”
Why should you not judge your fellow pimps in the GOP? Do you fear the Democrats so much that you will accept pretty much anything the GOP throws out in the name of Jesus? If so you are walking proof of the accuracy of David’s book.
Donny: “I take your judgments of my positions with a grain of salt. Jesus as the ultimate Judge of them. Not Ted Kennedy OR John McCain. Let’s see if you can take the testing.”
I’m not surprised, Donny. Self-righteousness seldom makes any accommodation for self-criticism.
Donny Begins ProofTexting: “My Jesus said to render to Caesar what is Caesar’s and to God what is God’s. Jesus presented ONLY the conservative view on marriage and threatened those that like leading children into harm. he ALSO wanted tax collectors to stop their dishonest taxation.”
The GOP held power in Congress for how many years without advancing the Human Life Amendment? Yet they continued to proclaim that abortion was an important issue…and were believed by people like you. President Bush had a GOP Congress for the first 6 years of his Presidency, and spending went through the roof. Tax breaks permitted good paying jobs to be moved overseas with government support, increasing the number of children living in poverty.
Yet every election cycle you can count on the GOP to trot out abortion and homosexuality, all for the purpose of riling folks like you and getting you to dress up Jesus in that slinky little number and trot him out on election day. Never mind that once they get elected they expect you to shut up and be a good little foot-soldier while they cater to their corporate Johns who pay the bills for their re-election.
You are a blind Pharisee, Donny, and I believe Jesus had a number of words for you and your fellow pimps in Matthew chapter 23.
Donny blindly continues: “If anyone is dressing up Jesus in a dress, pal, you had better look to the Left. That law “also” condemned men being effeminate in dress and behavior.”
The hypocrisy of the GOP is legion, Donny. Where do I begin? Larry Craig and Ted Haggard are easy targets, men who were rabid anti-homosexuals yet were outed by God and shown to be the sepulchers of death that they were. And yet the Jesus Pimps continue on unabated, saying nothing about the open robbery of the public treasury by Halliburton, Exxon-Mobil, Bechtel and a host of other profitable corporate Johns take billions in tax subsidies. You pimps are silent about this, and about the pitiful excuse that we cannot afford a pittance in comparison for health care for our children.
But just like Pavlov’s dogs, you and your fellow Jesus pimps bring out the vote for these corporate enablers in the GOP every time they wave the red meat of homosexual marriage your way. What do you suppose Jesus will say to you, Donny, when he asks you why you helped deprive some of his children from the health care they so desperately needed? What will you say when Jesus tells you that is why he blessed our nation so much, so we could take such good care of the children that have been born in our nation?
After all, life doesn’t end at birth, Donny, in spite of what your fellow pro-life pimps may say.
Donny: “What passes as the Biblical Christianity of the religious right, is the Biblical Christianity written by the first Christians. What passes for biblical Christianity for Liberals and Progressives and almost all Democrats, is the Humanist Manifesto.”
It is laughable, Donny, to read this. What passes for Biblical Christianity today would make the Apostles scratch their heads and start casting out demons from within folks like you, Donny, for they could not envision any other way that someone could do to their Master what you have done to him.
I’m not sure why I am wasting my time here, Donny, for you have proven over and over that you are incapable of anything approaching self-criticism or self-examination. I guess my only hope is that someday Jesus tires of being forced to bend over for the GOP and decides to bring that sword of righteousness with him the next time he meets you. It’s clear that there is nothing else that will make your errors evident to you. Not surprising, I guess, for it took going blind for Saul to change his ways.
I guess I will start praying for you to go blind, Donny. It worked for Paul…perhaps it may work for you.
But I doubt it.

O yeah, Donny just tries to follow Jesus.
So Donny, it’s your honest opinion that, when someone pitied Jesus for being from Nazareth (from where no good thing comes), he would have mocked their dental hygiene before belting them in the mouth and knocking out some teeth?
And that the Jesus who made his disciples put up a sword when he was being taken prisoner, and healed the ear of the man injured by that sword, would approve of pulling aside unconvicted men accused of war crimes, identified with nothing more than a picture, and simply shooting them in the head.
And that Jesus would really be impressed with those Thunderbolts, Stealth Bombers, and Navy SEALS? Because of his obvious love of death, violence, and mayhem?
That’s your Jesus?
Although your Bible is clearly way different than mine, try to check out the section where Jesus says that many will cry unto him, Lord, Lord, but he’ll send them into the outer darkness. “Ye knew me not.”
That’s gonna be you all the way Donny. Your Jesus is NOT the Jesus of the Gospels. He’s Moloch, he’s Baal, he’s Chemosh…an ugly tribal war god, gleeful at death, hungry for the blood of his foes. And you’re nothing but a reprehensible apostate to anything that Jesus of Nazareth ever expressed. You shame the Christian faith.
