Dancing... or drinking through life
I am not even sure that I know how to do a link anymore. I'm giving it a shot though so, three readers, please forgive me if I mess this up.
So Rod Dreher's sister is battling cancer. It is nasty. Their faith is extraordinary. Here's his latest post (I think)

Back...
I'm back here at JWalking after a bit of time because I just want someplace to record thoughts from time to time. I doubt that many of the thoughts will be political - there are plenty upon plenty of people offering their opinions on everything political and I doubt that I have much to add that will

Learning to tell a story
For the last ten months or so I've been engaged in a completely different world - the world of screenwriting. It began as a writing project - probably the 21st Century version of a yen to write the great American novel - a shot at a screenplay. I knew that I knew nothing about the art but was inspir

And just one more
I have, I think, just one more round of chemo left.
When I go through my pill popping regimen tomorrow morning it will be the last time for this particular round of drugs. Twenty-three rounds, it seems, is enough.
What comes next? We'll go back to what we did after the surgery. We'll watch and measu

A Newfie for Obama
NPR asked me to do a short memo to the president-elect. I chose to do it on the dog he should choose... and why. Check it out.

You’re really over my head today, but I’m grateful for the post. The dogs will eat the crumbs after the children have left the table.

While I don’t endorse potty-mouthed art or try to communicate that way, I’ve gotta say from watching the video – Mrs. Perry seems to have a humble and healthy attitude about her music competitors and the industry itself.
If she wasn’t friendly towards gays, I doubt Mtv would’ve profiled her.
Many of the folks in the Kuo community know that I grew up Evangelical and checked outta the program. Did I have to stick with the program to keep Jesus in my heart?
I’ve been reading the works of the Apostle Paul lately and have found him to be quite harsh about women. I don’t really know any major modern part of Christendom that adheres to Paul’s teachings: He says women shouldn’t speak in church; women shouldn’t wear men’s clothes; and to boot he’s pretty strict about widow’s behaviors.
But modern right wingers are gun’s a’ blazing over Romans Chapter I and Paul’s condemnation of homosexuals.
Well, I have a gay father-in-law and a lesbian sister who seem to know more about family bonds than a good deal of my straight family members.
I know for a fact that Jesus was never quoted on homosexuality in any of the synoptic gospels. And Paul himself admitted that he was a pretty anal retentive guy. *What an incredible thing that God used Paul to get gentiles into the fold.*
I, for one, don’t think that homosexuality is a deal breaker on salvation.

I don’t think her songs are about homosexuality – my kid has them on her IPOD – as much as a kind of world where things like that don’t matter. Seems her first musical hero was “Queen” and that makes sense.
She certainly very talented. Wonder how her parents are coping?

Listened to both songs – liked em. My kid has them on her IPOD. Hope she does well since she seems to have a very realistic view of what’s going on in the business and in life.

I think “Christian Outcast” is no way to describe her situation. She wasn’t cast out. She’s the master of her ship and she’s taken the secular route, like Michael English, Sam Cooke, Marvin Gaye, and many others. She’s an opportunist. She doesn’t seem wasted yet.

The song itself is pretty good. At least it sticks in your head, and has a good sound to it.
The bad news is that Katy Perry, no matter what the state of her faith-life, is seeking fame and money. I don’t fault her for that, because on some level, we all are… I think its part of our fallen condition.
The difficulty that I see is that Christian Music is incredibly difficult to break in to. From what I can tell, there is much more of a “trust” issue for Christian Music. I mean, if I like a song from an artist on secular radio, I don’t have to listen and judge–is this really what I believe about women, cars, heartbreak, life, or whatever? I can simply sit back and enjoy the “Voulez vous coucher avec moi?” of Lady Marmalade and not really question it.
Christian Music asks different questions than secular music: Do I trust Toby Mac’s theology like I trusted Rich Mullins? Is the David Crowder Band in the same place spiritually that I am? Did Michael W. Smith really sing that lyric about God, or a girl (because sometimes its hard to tell)?
The trust with Christian Music artists is difficult and can be divisive. Are they Pre-trib, Mid-trib, Post-trib, or Non-trib? Does this music truly glorify God? Is this song really worth my time? Does it sound too churchy? Is that okay?
I understand that Jessica Simpson, (originally a Southern Baptist from Waco, TX) had the same difficulty breaking into Christian Music. She loved to sing to God, and wanted a career in it. I understand that her original Christian record label told her that she was too sexy.
Anyway, long story short–Katy Perry has clearly left Christian Music for business reasons, and its likely that she sang her songs about homosexuality for many of the same reasons. Its just a shame to me that she isn’t going out into the world as “salt and light”, and as a missionary for Christ, rather than as another here-today-gone-tomorrow secular artist. She really is talented.

i think people are judging her too harshly. i don’t think she should be called an outcast because we don’t actually know whether she still believes in God or not- we can’t see her heart.
i’m not saying i agree with her lyrics ‘cuz lets face it, it’s just wrong, but most christians dont know how she felt about her upbringing. there are several articles circulating around saying how strict her parents were with her. for instance how she wasn’t allowed to play guitar because it was “the tool of the devil” (hello? chris tomlin??)i think people should understand how extremely strict upbringing can really make people feel the need to rebel for freedom. i hope she can find herself and Christ again.she trully is very talented
