I write about this every year because I believe it’s so important. One of the best things you can do this week is clean your living space and whatever else you can. I learned the benefits years ago when I lived with clutter. It felt right to have all my “stuff” with me. Why give away a perfectly good sweater, even if I never wore it? I felt the same with the partially used lipstick in a color I didn’t like on me, books I knew I’d never read and an assortment of things I’d collected over my adult lifetime.

When I read Louise M. Hay’s book, You Can Heal Your Life, I was astounded by the message in her section on how clearing clutter also clears your life to attract more things. I began to think seriously about why I kept so much stuff and began to purge my closets. Ever since then I clean like crazy before the New Year begins and give or throw away a lot of stuff that I don’t need. It feels so freeing to let go of so much! I actually feel much lighter and in control of my life afterwards.

Two weeks ago a trucking company collected things for victims of hurricane Sandy. There was a truck parked nearby to donate clothing and household items. I went through my closet on a special mission and gathered things I never thought I’d get rid of. As I went though my closets and drawers, I’d look at certain items and think, “Who needs this more, me or someone who lost everything?” I brought 3 huge bags of stuff to the truck. That cleaning out felt especially good!  Find a good charity and donate what you don’t need to make room for goodies in 2103! That’s a double benefit—you make room in your life and someone in need gets what you didn’t need.
