Happy Valentine’s Day!

It’s the day earmarked for love. But, don’t forget to love yourself, even if you have a romantic partner. I personally think that every day should be a day for love, not just February 14th! Many women look forward to this day for love if they’re in a relationship since their guys tend to be pushed to be romantic. And if you’re not in a relationship, this day for love can be a day of sadness, depression, and feeling low about yourself. This is so unnecessary!

I admit that I used to be like that. If my friend and I had no boyfriends on this special day, we’d go into mourning. We’d walk down the street and look at the flowers each guy carried like daggers in our hearts. We fed each other’s misery and gorged ourselves on chocolate to feel better. This went on for years—until I learned to value the love I have for me.

You can forget about self-love on Valentine’s Day when the importance of getting love from a romantic partner gets magnified out of proportion. Yet it’s just one date on a calendar. I finally realized that I’m always in a relationship—with me! And that’s the most important love I’ll ever have. You can be in a relationship with YOU. When you build your self-love, you’ll never feel unloved.

Whether you’re in a relationship with a romantic partner or not, honor YOU on Valentine’s Day. Even if your partner has wonderful things planned for you, do something to honor what should be your first and most important love—love for yourself. And if you don’t have a special someone, treat yourself to something special. It can be small but meaningful. Buy yourself a rose or something you love to eat. Plan to spend the evening with a friend at home—watching movies and eating takeout so you don’t get down watching all the couples out.

I’m not in a relationship with a special guy and will be happily honoring me. I’ve planned an evening doing things I enjoy.  I won’t lament not having a man this year. I will celebrate me, and the strong self-love I’ve developed. After so many years of having not loving me, I’m so grateful for this wonderful love that I have all the time. So honor yourself today! And tomorrow, and every day! You deserve it!
