How to Stop the World and Be Still

posted by Guy Finley

There is nothing as certain as silence, stillness, and solitude to

introduce you to the secrets of yourself.

In one respect, everything about one’s spiritual life is so terribly simple. There is only one time and one way in which to be still, and that is to be still.

So the first thing is to understand that we don’t need to stop the world. What we need to do is understand that the world whirling around us is the world of our own reactions. It isn’t until we can start to see some of this that it becomes possible for us to realize that it isn’t our task to stop our own mind. If we can see clearly our reactions and our identification with the reactions, then we can realize the way to stop the world is to understand that it’s not our world that is moving. It’s not our world that is in jeopardy. It’s not our world that is caught in fear. That’s how the world stops. There is nothing we can do. Everything we’ve tried to do to stop our mind, to be quiet, contradicts the wish we have because it is a form of resistance.
It is not a curse that the only way to be still is to be still. It just means that you have to wade into your own life. That is what meditation is. Meditation isn’t just sitting someplace with your eyes closed. Meditation is a constant, direct relationship with the sum of yourself in the moment. When one is truly meditative there is always stillness, because the act of meditation takes place from the awareness of movement instead of being a captive of movement through reacting to it.
When its time to be still, let yourself be still… and just see all that isn’t. Then don’t react or identify with all that isn’t. Let all that isn’t reveal all that isn’t you — meaning all the noise, the fitfulness pulling you left and right, revisiting the past, planning the future, getting caught up with how much you want to be a good spiritual person. Watch it all. If you work at this, and are willing to enter into it, slowly and certainly you will begin to realize that the reason you have not been able to be still is because you have not understood that who you are is not the noise.

The World Beyond Preparation
Preparation, hard work, is part of perfecting whatever you’ve imagined you want to attain in this world. But there is a world beyond anything we can imagine; it is an intelligent presence, a “place” of powers and principles whose self-obliterating touch can no more be prepared for than can a m

When I was 19 and a member of the US Army stationed in Germany, I spent much time in the enlisted mans library. Trying to find something that could help me make it through life…mentally!
I found a book entitled HOW TO MAKE IT THROUGH LIFE BY CONTROLLING YOUR MIND….The phraseology below has stayed with me ever since
reading it…I am not perfect, but I am constantly looking for good suggestions that makes life a bit more understanding….
WHAT WE DO AND WHAT WE ARE DEPENDS ON 3 THINGS…
1. The environmental presures around us…
2. Our animal and biological inner tensions….and…
3. The evaluations and interpretations we give to what happens within and outside ourselves…
SUCCESSFUL LIVING DEPENDS ON THE METHODS AND SKILLS WITH WHICH WE
USE THESE THREE!
I am 74 years old now and still refer to the above theory to keep me going…and I have been through some TOUGH times and situations!

So true! I have to say that for me, and I would guess for many other people also, the most difficult part is letting go. We want to believe that the world whirling around is all under our control. To take this step in medatative practice means that we have to give up that illusion. What a humbling experience!

That is so true that sometime you have to actually go back into your past to inter into your future. Almost like undressing yourself in the dark.

Being still means I have to pay attention to what my heart is really telling me…I’m not sure I’m ready for that. The noise that is all around me, that’s inside of me keeps me from realizing how sad I am without you…

Yes we must be still and know that he is God. Meditation should only be reflected with God, and His will for our life. Connecting to Him in our meditation will fill us with what we need to overcome anything.

I like what Evelyn Underhill says about meditation: the practice seeks to bring our scattered thoughts to one, a multiplicity to unity. Simplicity and stillness are the 101 skills for living a spiritual life that stays connected to the divine currents running through our everyday experiences.
