How to Dismiss Any Negative State

posted by Guy Finley

Dark inner states win their victory over us because we believe in them. More to the point, we believe in the illusions they create within us without seeing that these same mistaken beliefs then shape the structure of our reality.

No one is saying that our various dark inner states aren’t real, and those who claim otherwise deceive themselves and whomever they try to guide. Such darkness is a reality, including the shadowy creatures dwelling within it. But the key to understand here is that this reality called darkness is itself but an effect of a far and away Greater Reality: the Light.

Here is the missing understanding for which we have been searching all along. Darkness, in whatever form we experience it — from a simple black, starless night, to a depressed thought or feeling — only exists in the absence of light. And the more clearly we can see the truth of this principle, regardless of the world in which it’s expressed, the greater our potential to realize its power.

The true solution for bringing an end to unconscious suffering now rests in our hands. The power needed to release ourselves from our unhappy moments is in the light of our new understanding as to how dark states keep us in the dark. In other words, to know the truth of them is our triumph over them. Now we must take these truths into action.

In summary, you’ll find below a short list of seven special lights. Learning to call upon the new understanding they contain and reveal is all the help you need to dismiss any dark inner states:

1) No negative state has the right to reside within you, and can only dwell therein if it tricks you into lending it a dark room in which to stay.

2) The Light is all the might you need to successfully turn away any dark inner visitor.

3) Your true wish to understand a negative state initiates the entrance of that specialized Light you need to make this same wish come true.

4) We suffer what we do, as we do, only through our unconscious consent, so the first step in freeing ourselves from unseen sorrow is to deliberately bring ourselves into conscious awareness of its dark presence within us.

5) Never accept the presence of any suffering state for the reasons it provides.

6) It is possible to understand any negative state out of existence!

7) Your created nature is a blend of shadows and the light that creates them, but your True Nature, your original essence, is a Light that has no shadow.

    Hi Marguerite,

Kate with Guy Finley’s Life of Learning here. The seven steps were listed in this post, but there was just a problem with the formatting and they weren’t showing up as a list. But I have fixed it and you should be able to see them now.

You’re right, this is a great list of insights — and each one can be worked with in any difficult moment, by gently leading one out of negativity and introducing them to new, brighter possibilities!

    Kate

Yesterday was my 77th birthday. I am finding it more difficult to “let go” now, or so it seems, than ever before.
Each day another “old wound” appears. A ghost from the past refusing to be on it’s way.
I must find peace of mind somehow, someway.

B.

I thank you for this information, for so long I have been struggling with darkness. Just yesterday I prayed to God to ask him to help me overcome this darkness, and then here today I see this ad. I know it is going to take a moment but the important thing is I have asked for help, I realize that I cannot do this alone, I need help.

Again, this is beautiful! Actually, no one has any excuse for being in the dark nowdays, because there is so much light filtering through.

Thank you, Mr. Finley. I am among those who really appreciate your work.

Are you talking of negative feelings, thoughts or the feeling a negative intruder?

I ask this because I fight my negativity in life all the time a couple times a day and it can go on for 15-20 minutes. I feel like just quitting.

It was a lovely article, and I saw the 7 steps you wrote there, but there isn’t more on each on HOW to achieve that stuff. I find myself being angry about so much and I just want peace. There’s so much going on that I cannot control and knowing that I can’t brings frustration and seeing the results of it sucks too. I know that most would say to let go and let the universe take care of it, but it’s angering to see some things going on that needs to be fixed or stopped. Hence, the anger and that’s not good for me.

It helps not to be serious about it. Visualize our cherished drama and see the ridiculous in it. Am I on the right track?

Hi Barbara,

My name is Kate and I monitor the comments on Guy’s blog posts. Yes, you are on the right track! What you describe is essentially a type of separation from your thoughts through “self-observation” — Guy calls it being watchful instead of willful. When I think I am my thoughts, I have no choice but to do what they tell me to do — but when I *watch* my thoughts, suddenly I see that now I can choose whether or not to listen to them. You will find lots of really helpful information on this idea on Life of Learning’s main website, guyfinley.org (esp. in the Q&A section under Writings).

Best wishes,
Kate
