No Agreement on Health Care; How About Faith-Based Volunteerism?

Friday July 31, 2009

Categories: Abortion, Congress, Health Care

Barry, I know we won't agree on the abortion/health care issue - but it's worth noting that we have heard from more than 70,000 Americans (more than 60,000 online) who are demanding that Congress include an exclusion on abortion services to prevent them from becoming mandatory benefits in any health care legislation.  There are a number of pro-life amendments being considered now in the House and we will continue to support these measures as the debate continues.

With respect to parental rights, it's important for parents to be able to rely on their deeply held religious beliefs when it comes to the care and upbringing of their children.  Parental rights, however, must never be used as a guise for abuse or neglect.  If medical issues are involved, there must be a balance between parental rights and doing what is best for the child.

Barry, I want to call your attention to an interesting report on volunteerism in America.  And, what's particularly interesting about this study conducted by the Corporation for National & Community Service, a federal agency, is the contribution that faith-based organizations make toward volunteer work.

The new study concludes that religious organizations are the most popular organizations through which volunteers serve - faith-based groups attracting the most volunteers.  The study cites that in the last two years (2006-08) nearly 36% of all volunteers worked with religious organizations.  The numbers are even higher for older adults (47%) and African-American volunteers (47.1%).

And, those who do volunteer work through faith-based groups are more likely to keep doing that work - 70% of volunteers linked directly to faith-based groups continue serving from one year to the next - the highest retention rate among volunteers.

According to the study, a total of nearly 62-million Americans volunteered through an organization in 2008 - up one million from the previous year.  That's 8-billion hours of service worth an estimated $162-billion.

It's encouraging to see the spirit of volunteerism thriving - and it's even more encouraging to see the important role played by faith-based organizations.  That's a good thing, isn't it Barry?

Boris,
Sadly all that comes through in your posts is hatred and bitterness. Unfortunately when you speak that is all we hear. Your message is lost.

There is more to life. Please seek Him.

I don't really know if Obama's birth certificate has been seen or not. Many people are saying that it has not been seen. But if it had not been seen, then how could he have ever become President in the first place? The President of the USA has to be born in the USA and must be at least 35 years old.

This probably wouldn't even be worth mentioning were it not for the other things that are happening to our Constitution these days. But just jumping back to the birth certificate - to end the argument, why didn't Obama just show it on TV or the internet, and settle the thing once and for all?

Oh well. This is probably not even worth arguing. But, again, why don't they just show it and be done with it?

As it stands, it just look like another place where they are totally attempting to destroy freedom in this country and rip the Constitution to shreds.

If these birther nuts really thought Obama wasn't a citizen they wouldn't just be trying to say he shouldn't be president. They would be trying to get him deported. Think about it. Unless you're a Christian of course. Then you wouldn't be allowed to think about it.

I don't believe that the argument about health care is even about health care. We are putting the emphasis in the wrong place! I don't believe that President Obama could care one iota about health care. He, whether knowingly or unknowlingly, is looking for power. Our Founding Fathers didn't trust government, and neither should we. F. A. Hayek's book, "Road to Serfdom" tells it like it is. Socialism always leads to totalitarianism! If government begins to grow, it will also become obnoxiously overbearing. That's why we still need a separation of powers. If you allow one part of government to outgrow its limits, and it will begin to force the other parts of government under its confining wings, and will hold them like chains. The Congress allowed the Supreme Court to begin usurping power years ago, and the power usurped has begun to pulverise us! Now, Congress once again is allowing the power to be unconstitutionally usurped, but this time by the President.

So government is breaking out of its cage, and unless we put it back in there, it will destroy us as a nation!
