Purging Religious References: If at First You Don't Succeed . . .

Barry, you pose an interesting question.  I believe that end of life decisions should be made primarily between an individual and that individual's family and trusted advisors, including spiritual counselors.  An individual should certainly be able to consult his physician, if the individual so chooses.  I would imagine that most health care plans would cover an annual physical exam during which a person could consult with his physician.

I do think it is inappropriate for the government to give physicians an incentive to initiate this conversation and mandate what should be covered in the counseling.  That could all too easily lead to a scenario where the federal government makes care decisions based on life expectancy.

And, now from the category... if at first you don't succeed, try, try again.  That's exactly what Michael Newdow, an atheist, and his fellow plaintiffs are doing - this time in a federal appeals court - this time appealing a lower court decision that dismissed their lawsuit challenging prayers offered at the presidential inauguration - including the phrase used in the oath, "So help me God."

No Abortion Diversion, Just the Facts

Barry, even as another health care plan is being introduced into Congress, there's a continuing - and a very real - concern about the issue of abortion.

Senators Michael Enzi of Wyoming and Charles Grassley of Iowa have expressed their concern to Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus who is offering his own health care measure.  Senators Enzi and Grassley are correctly concerned about the lack of language in the bill.

According to the New York Times report:

Mr. Enzi and Mr. Grassley also told Mr. Baucus that health legislation must include language affirmatively prohibiting the use of federal money to pay for abortion. The restriction, they said, should apply to any subsidies that help low-income people buy insurance. In addition, they said, health plans should not be obliged to provide abortion. Thus, they said, the bill should "include a conscience clause to protect entities from being required to contract with abortion providers."

Health Care Speech and the Truth About Abortion Coverage

I don't know which polls you are looking at, but it appears that there was a double digit growth in support of the President's basic approach after he spoke to the joint session of Congress.  He also told the truth about what the healthcare plan--at least as it is moving through the House of Representatives--doesn't cover.  It doesn't have the federal government funding any types of abortions not already funded by Medicaid under the so-called "Hyde amendment".

Jay, it seems absolutely clear that an amendment by Congresswoman Lois Capps of California is a brilliantly conceived resolution of the whole matter.  Unfortunately, it has been villified by many on the Right and simply misunderstood by the generally responsible group Factcheck.org.

President Obama Misses Critical Opportunity on Health Care

Barry, unfortunately President Obama squandered a prime-time audience and a Congressional address to do very little to move the ball forward regarding efforts to reform our health care system.

President Obama is losing support with the American people on this issue.  And, after his address I can see why.

In fact, I would argue that the President drew more lines in the sand - dividing Americans - especially pro-life Americans who don't want abortion services mandated as part of some kind of health care 'benefit.'

Post-Kennedy, What Next?

It did not take long for the media and politicos to start speculating about what the death of Senator Kennedy will mean to the current debate on health care and other vital issues.

Just hours after his death, a call from some to turn Obama-care into Kennedy-care.  Some are vowing to "win one for Teddy."

Top Democrats are hoping to rally the troops - to reenergize efforts to pass health care legislation.

Outrage In Proportion

I like to think that my outrage is in relative proportion to the outrage that generated it in the first place.  I have never been known to give any politician a "pass" nor to overstate the gravity of a politician's anti-separation errors....

Where's the Outrage?

Barry, I'm pleased to see that you brought up President Obama's use of religion during his conference call designed to drum up additional support among religious Americans for his health care plan.  I'm glad that you're concerned, but disappointed that...

God's Chosen Healthcare Reform?

Yesterday at 5 o'clock Eastern time, I joined the President and 130,000 of his closest friends on a conference call about health care.  Earlier in the day, the President had a similar phone call with about 1,000 rabbis, initiated by...

White House 'Flagging' Operation Disabled

Barry, it looks like the White House got the message:  its email 'flagging' operation appears to have been disabled.   As I reported to you last week, the White House launched in early August what can only be described as...

Silencing the Critics

Barry, there's a troubling pattern developing as the White House and Congressional leadership embark on a campaign to silence their critics - especially when it comes to concerns about health care.   Example One:  Last week, in an official White...

Abortion Mandate in Health Care is Not "Choice"

Barry, I disagree that "any sensible health care reform" is going to have to cover, as you call it "reproductive health care," or as I would say, "abortion."  Americans do not want their federal dollars paying for abortions.  Let me...

No Mandated Abortion Coverage in National Health Care

In an effort to revamp the nation's health care system, there's a troubling development underway in the legislative process  Congress is considering health care legislation that would identify abortion as a health 'benefit' and mandate coverage of abortion services in...

Sotomayor Convinces 4/9 of Supreme Court She Is Right

Jay, give me a break.  Four of the nine Justices of the Supreme Court yesterday reached the same conclusion that Judge Sonia Sotomayor did as a judge on the Second Circuit Court of Appeals.  The other five reached an alternative...

Time to Turn Up the Heat on Iran

It is a compelling scene - thousands in the streets of Iran - calling for freedom - fighting for free and fair elections.  And, Barry, what is most troubling - but not necessarily surprising - is the Iranian regime's reaction...

Obama Opens Door - Now Action Must Follow

Barry, President Obama opened the door with a brief mention of religious freedom in his 55-minute speech to the Arab world. To his credit, he did bring up the importance of religious freedom, saying:  "Freedom of religion is central to...

Probably Not the Best Time For Lectures In Mideast

As you know, Jay, I am not unsympathetic to the plight of the many of the people you represent around the world.  There are strong human rights arguments to be made in asylum cases in Europe--and frankly strong ones to...

Quick Question: Anybody Praying Harder Today?

I don't want to get into a big debate here about the value, if any, of prayer.  However, this is the National Day of Prayer, so designated by an act of Congress back in 1952.  President Obama, as required by...

Rest Easy, Barry, Don't Expect 'Excessive Outreach' to Right on Supreme Court Pick

Barry, don't worry about it.  I really don't think we're going to see what you label as 'excessive outreach' to the Right by President Obama regarding his pick to replace retiring Supreme Court Justice David Souter. Sure, the President is...

Shocking News! President May Pick Justice Who Agrees With Him

I have been amused over the weekend by the "sky is falling" rhetoric of the Right about the impending retirement of David Souter from the Supreme Court. Curiously, Jay, many of your colleagues concede that they don't like Souter's record,...

With Obama, The Criticism is About Substance, Not Style

Barry, I really don't understand what you are talking about.  Much of what President Obama is being criticized for revolves around substantive issues - not style.  And, it's hardly "nitpicking" as you suggest.  A lot of troubling developments have occurred...

Carp, Carp, Carp: Must The Right Always Fish For Reasons To Attack Obama?

I've been out in California a few days and I'm constantly hearing people ask: "Why doesn't the Right ever give President Obama a break?"  What they mean is that literally every day the hosts of Fox News, the Drudge Report,...
