We Are Constructed Through Metaphor: Article in the New Online Publication “Full Moon Insight Journal”

posted by Dr. Arnie Kozak

My article, We Are Constructed Through Metaphor just appeared in the the new online Journal, full moon Insight Journal, from the Barre Center for Buddhist Studies where I am a faculty member.

The article explores the role of language, metaphor, and self. It goes beyond the idea that we understand self through metaphors to the radical idea that what we experience as self IS a metaphor.

One of my students shared a story. A friend of hers was on a whitewater rafting trip in Colorado. During the trip, one of the people in the raft fell out into the river. Oh goodness..I need a bit of time to absorb such lofty thoughts as “We suffer because we are engaged in ceaseless definition of and protection of the imagined self.” My “imagined self” is mutable, in part depending on reactions of those around me. Tonight I’m told I resemble Reese Witherspoon. But earlier I was her grandmother as I worked out in front of the mirrors at the Y. Suffering morphing into joy morphing into suffering, etc. But nevermind..kudos to you, Dr. K, for getting the blog job done.
