Happy Mindfulness Day 2012!

posted by Dr. Arnie Kozak

Today, 12 September, is Mindfulness Day. According to Wisdom Publications:

“Mindfulness Day was created to share the power and benefits of mindfulness. So many people, in so many ways, have benefited from the techniques of mindfulness, it made sense to celebrate its benefits and elevate awareness on one special day. Whether you spend it in formal meditation, reading a book, gathering with friends, or reaching out to those in need, we hope you will find time to practice mindfulness and share the benefits of mindfulness.”

Putting their money where there mouth is, so to speak, Wisdom is offering ten of their mindfulness titles for $.99 for the next few days. I was happy to see that my book, Wild Chickens and Petty Tyrants: 108 Metaphors for Mindfulness, is among them. Here is the complete list:

Beyond Mindfulness in Plain English by Bhante Gunaratana
Eight Mindful Steps to Happiness by Bhante Gunaratana
Journey to Mindfulness by Bhante Gunaratana
The Meditator’s Atlas by Matthew Flickstein
Mindful Teaching and Teaching Mindfulness by Deborah Schoeberlein with Suki Sheth
Mindful Therapy by Thomas Bien
The Mindful Writer by Dinty W. Moore
Mindfulness Yoga by Frank Jude Boccio
Wild Chickens and Petty Tyrants by Arnie Kozak
Who Ordered This Truckload of Dung? by Ajahn Brahm

This is a great opportunity to get some fine books for only a dollar. These titles are only available as eBooks from Amazon and Barnes & Noble, now until September 15. I’ve read some of these titles and look forward to reading the others. I reviewed the Mindful Writer on Mindfulness Matters back in April.

Of course, every day could be Mindfulness Day. Those of you who read my blog know my opinion about holidays. However, if reflecting on Mindfulness Day can support your practice, inspire you to practice, or help you to acquire new tools to practice, more power to it!

To find out more about Mindfulness Day, read here. From the Mindfulness Day website:

Mindfulness is no longer just a Buddhist or spiritual practice—in the news each day, we hear of practitioners in psychotherapy, general medicine, education, and even the military finding benefit in its application. It’s our goal that Mindfulness Day will raise awareness about the value and benefit mindfulness brings for everyone on our planet.
