Teaching evolution

posted by Dave Banack | 11:11am Wednesday April 29, 2009

At Mormon Insights, a post on the do’s and don’ts of teaching evolution to college students.

The author:

I am a happy and content Latter-day Saint who teaches evolution at a non-LDS university. In fact, I have taught evolution in various forums and institutions for 30 years.

His conclusion:

A main point to this essay is that all students need to learn about the central principle of life science: Darwin’s evolution. Religious students are intelligent, and they need NO special treatment at all. Evolution is neutral to theology, even though some argue that it is not. Evolution (in my opinion) is the greatest of all scientific principles.

It is a balanced and reasonable post, well worth the read.

A statistical portrait of Mormons
The Pew Forum recently issued a detailed summary of survey information about Mormons gathered as part of a much larger survey of religious life in the United States. It is a very readable summary, noting that Mormons comprise 1.7% of adults in the US; 35% of Mormon adults live in Utah and 13% live i

A very interesting post at Mormon Matters, reviewing a 1989 book titled "Will the Real Heretics Please Stand Up?" The book was written by an attorney who grew up a Jehovah's Witness, then became an Evangelical Christian. That lasted until he conducted a thorough reading the original writings of the

Reason and revelation in Mormonism
This is a second piece on Bushman's Mormonism: A Very Short Introduction (OUP, 2008). [See Part 1.] Every faith and denomination has an approach for balancing faith and reason. In Chapter Two of the book, Bushman briefly outlines the LDS approach. The context, of course, is how a faith or den

Dave,
O/T but whatever. I find a lot of great Mormon books to read by pursuing your site — have you thought about getting a goodreads.com account to make my life easier?
Thanks,
Justin

Thanks for the tip, Justin. I don’t have a goodreads account, but I do have lots of books and book reviews listed at my website (where Mormon Inquiry used to be hosted):
