CESNUR in Salt Lake City this week

Wednesday June 10, 2009

Categories: Conferences

A reminder from Morehead's Musings that the CESNUR Conference is being held in Salt Lake City June 11-13 (Thursday through Saturday). CESNUR stands for the Center for Studies on New Religions. It is an academic organization that promotes the objective and informed study of new religious movements. Indirectly, it helps any interested reader figure out that the Christian countercult movement is the religious equivalent of medical quackery. There are some very interesting sessions planned (see the conference program for details) covering a variety of religions, including Mormonism. If I'm lucky I'll be able to attend some of the sessions on Saturday.

The Salt Lake Tribune has posted a couple of stories relating to the conference you might find interesting:

I'm not sure what you mean by the statement: "Indirectly, it helps any interested reader figure out that the Christian countercult movement is the religious equivalent of medical quackery."

I am not a member of CESNUR and just heard about it through your blog, but I don't think it is trying to villify or discredit any religious belief.

No if you want religion vilification just read the reader comments of any LDS related story on the SLTrib.

If "the Christian countercult movement" is a "religious belief", then I guess having accurate information about new and upcoming religions is liable to lead parishioners to apostatize...

I'm jealous. Really. CESNUR seems like a weird outfit in some really interesting ways and it'd be a kick to attend.
