Emmet Otter’s Jug Band Christmas

posted by Nell Minow | 5:21pm Sunday December 2, 2007

Judy Barber wrote a wonderful comment about this neglected gem:

One of THE sweetest movie or video is Emmet Otter Jugband Christmas, a muppet video. I make everyone watch it at Christmas. And the funnest thing about it is the bloopers with these muppets. You swear you are watching little people in costume. Hard to find the video to buy but soooo worth it. The “sell the hair to buy the watch” to “sell the watch to buy the hair ornament” theme.

The movie is available on Amazon — to find out more, click on the picture above.

The Loving Story
Tonight HBO premieres a new documentary about one of the most important marriages in American history.  And their name was Loving. They should have been able to have the quiet life they hoped for.  Mildred and Richard Loving were residents of Virginia who were married in the District of Columbi

Some of my favorite movie romances are just right for Valentine's Day.  Cuddle up with your valentine and a bowl of popcorn and enjoy these movies about how love makes us crazy and immeasurably happy at the same time. 1. Moonstruck Cher won an Oscar as the bookkeeper who has given up on love unt

What a funny thing–my wife, my 2-year-old and I are about to sit down and watch “Emmet Otter”. We have it on VHS; we’re “kickin’ it old school”. We should look for the DVD of it, as Muppet bloppers sounds pretty cool! It is a cute story. It doesn’t have a directly religious/”nativity” message, but certainly a positive spiritual one, about sacrifice, love and community. My wife especially gets a kick out of the Riverbottom Nightmare Band. Go figure!
Merry Christmas!

I have similarly fond memories of Emmet and co. But I wonder where my critical faculties stop and my nostalgia radar begins … will today’s kiddies gobble up “A Christmas Story” or “Emmet” like I did years ago? I can’t wait to start a family and find out. I will nudge my children to love these stories just like I did … but it’s ultimately up to them.

Another great movie from the same team is The Christmas Toy, which features Rugby the tiger who doesn’t quite understand the Christmas isn’t all about him. Fortunately, I’ve managed to convince my kids this one is worth watching.
