Ann Hornaday's excellent Washington Post essay on college professors in movies included some of my favorites. I especially liked the comments from first-time screenwriter Mark Jude Poirier, the son of a college professor, who has spent time teaching himself. His...
It's a tiny role, but I loved the writing professor in "The Sure Thing" (Viveca Lindfors). She plays a crucial role in the film's finale, and she reminded me of great English teachers I've had. Quirky. Eccentric. Full of life.

I would put "Wonder Boys" and "Educating Rita" at the top of the list, too.
Although, when I showed "Wonder Boys" to my movie club, most people didn't get into it as much as I. I loved the relationship between Michael Douglas's character and the pre-Spiderman Tobey Maguire's character. This was a charming, low key film about mid-life crisis.
One note about "Shadowlands" - personally, I think the original BBC version of the film, starring Joss Ackland and Claire Bloom was superior to the version starring Anthony Hopkins. I love Anthony Hopkins, but I thought he was miscast as C.S. Lewis.

Pound for pound, no movie has more great professors than "Ball of Fire."
As for bad professors, what about Jeff Daniels in "Terms of Endearment" or professor Kingsfield in "The Paper Chase"?

Kudos to Christian for coming up with a professor played by a woman. For the life of me I can't think of any.
No Robin Williams? He's had a couple memorable roles as an educator and won an Oscar for his role as a professor in Good Will Hunting.

Big Dave, Robin Williams was a high school teacher in "Dead Poet's Society" -- look for him in my next list. He taught community college in "Good Will Hunting," but he was Will's therapist, not professor, so I did not include him.
iorek, "Ball of Fire" is one of my all-time favorites, but I left them out because they are not classroom academics. The professors in that movie are working on a big research project. And I wanted this list to be about teachers, not scholars. We never see Jeff Daniels' character in the classroom in "Terms of Endearment;" I'm guessing Flap was no better teacher than he was a husband. And I liked Kingsfield in "The Paper Chase!" That movie made me want to go to law school. Not a great human being, perhaps, but the kind of teacher who makes his students think and work hard.
Thanks, Christian -- I did not think of Viveca Lindfors, who is wonderful in that role. All of the female professors I could think of ("Back to School," anyone?) were there as love interests.
Alicia, I agree with you about the original "Shadowlands," though this is one case where I love them both. There's a nice book about the real-life romance.
And Cindi, I love "Drumline," too! I see that Nick Cannon will be at the Tribeca Film Festival next week. I'll be there, too, and I'd love to meet him!
