Every so often a dance comes along that is just tricky enough to take a little practice but with individual steps simple enough that anyone can do it. Think “Macarena.” Soulja Boy’s eponymous song and dance is in that category and I have been charmed by the way it has inspired an entire category of YouTube videos of dads doing the dance for their kids. Some of the videos are posted by teenagers who think it is funny to see their dads try to be cool. But if you watch them you can see that these are dads who know that what really is cool is jettisoning any sense of dignity to make your children laugh. There is even a group of YouTube videos showing brides dancing with their fathers to tender songs about love and leaving home and then breaking into duo versions of “Soulja Boy” together. You go, Dad!

How can you be “charmed” by any song that refers to women as “ho”s? Even more disturbing is the reference to “Supermanning” them. (If you need to know what it means, I suggest you look it up on UrbanDictionary.com.) I do not think this is the proper website for these videos, as naive as the people in them may be.

Bob, what’s charming here is the fathers entertaining their children by dancing along, not the song’s lyrics, which most people seem to assume are nonsense rhymes.

I understand the ‘humor’ to the situation but I feel it’s so sad that a 17 year old punk is singin about explicit lyrics in a way that is subliminal and is a little bit creepy to see unsupecting repectable people being tricked into thinking they are being cool. – Bob

A very good point about the coarsening of our culture, Bob. I am sometimes astounded by the music I hear in elevators, stores, and the gym, and wonder if anyone ever listens to the lyrics.
